Chicken Souvlaki

I have started making these from scratch again.

They are so much cheaper than already prepared ones and so much better in taste.

My family have asked me to only make these ones now. Hubby said they are the best chicken Souvlaki he has eaten

You can use either breast fillet or thighs fillet but to be honest thigh fillet is best .
Makes 18

10 min cooking time
15 min Prep time
Plus marinating time

Ingredients

MARINADE

  • 1.2kg chicken thigh fillets (or breast), cut into 1"/2.5cm pieces
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice
  • 3 garlic cloves , minced
  • 3 tbsp dried oregano
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • Black pepper
Plus Oil or oil spray to cook

Instructions

  • Place chicken and Marinade into a bowl and set aside to marinate for at least 3 hours to overnight.
  • Thread 4 to 5 pieces of chicken onto skewers.
  • Heat a little oil ( around 1 tablespoon) or oil spray in a large skillet over high heat (or BBQ). Cook skewers for 3 minutes on each side, or until cooked through.
NOTE
If cooking on BBQ the soak wooden skewers in a bowl of cold water for 20 minutes before putting chicken on. This stops the skewers from burning.

Serving suggestions

Serve on the sticks with salad or vegetables of choice. I will also make potatoes or chips.
I have also made a lemon rice which I've added the recipe before.

I also use this recipe and serve the chicken with salad and tzatziki on Greek Pita bread

Note
My husband is Greek and they have been making this recipe way before recipetineats was born !!

I just worked out I will use around 1.2 kg and which makes around 18 souvlaki. I've been paying $8 kg for breast fillets at Coles so cost me around $12 for 18 which breaks down to just around 66c a souvlaki.

Last time I purchased ready made uncooked chicken souvlaki from the butchers I paid $80 for 48 and that was cheap which worked out $1.60 each and they were fatty and no where as delicious as these.
