Channel Seven reveals major change to annual holiday event this year

The holiday season is synonymous with traditions, and for many, one of the most cherished of these is tuning into the annual Carols in the Domain.

This event has been a staple of festive celebrations since 1983, broadcast on Channel Seven just a few days before Christmas.

But this year, Channel Seven has announced a major change that is set to reinvigorate this classic event.

In a move that will delight viewers across the nation, the 2024 edition of Carols in the Domain will be broadcast live.

This is a significant shift from the pre-recorded concerts of recent years and marks a return to the spontaneity and excitement that only a live event can offer.

Michael McKay, the show’s executive producer for 36 years, expressed his enthusiasm for the change.

'This event has always been about bringing people together and being able to share it live with the entire nation enhances that spirit of connection and celebration,' he said in a statement.

McKay added that the decision to go live ‘is an exciting milestone’ after several years.

The news of the live broadcast is a response to viewers' feedback, many of whom have voiced their preference for a live show.

'Whatever happened to the live TV presentation? Is Carols in the Domain just going to be a pre-recorded TV package every year now?' one viewer lamented.

‘Just found out Carols in the Domain isn't going to be broadcast live again. Pretty disgusting,’ another commented.

‘Was awesome as usual, shame it was pre-recorded though,’ a third chimed in.

The shift to a live format is expected to rekindle the magic of Carols in the Domain, which last year attracted over 2 million viewers.

It also brings the event in line with its counterpart, Carols by Candlelight, which has been broadcast live on Channel Nine every Christmas Eve since 1979.

As for the lineup, Channel Seven has already revealed a star-studded list of performers who will grace the stage.

This year's event will feature The Wiggles, Samantha Jade, Rhonda Burchmore, Hugh Sheridan, Conrad Sewell, Budjerah, and Mark Vincent, among others.

Adding to the excitement, Dancing With The Stars legend Kym Johnson will make her Carols debut as both a performer and choreographer.

Chong Lim will be in charge of the musical direction, ensuring that the evening's performances will be spectacular.

While the hosts for the 2024 Carols in the Domain are yet to be announced, it's anticipated that Sunrise anchors Natalie Barr and Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington will return to lead the festivities.

Natalie has previously hosted the event 11 times, often alongside David ‘Kochie’ Koch, while Matt made a memorable debut last year.

For those who wish to experience the magic in person, Carols in the Domain will continue to be held in the Domain Gardens in Sydney.

Attendees can expect an enchanting evening complete with fireworks and a snowfall simulation, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Tickets are now available on the Carols in the Domain website, with options ranging from free spots on the Festive Lawn to the premium $395 Diamond Class.
