Over the past years, we’ve come across listings of properties and rentals asking for borderline absurd amounts of money.
Well, this story might just be among the most notable we’ve featured so far.
A woman named Caity was just looking for a place to crash after a mate's party, roughly a 45-minute drive away from her house.
Hoping to find a cheaper alternative to the dreaded double Uber fare to and from her humble abode, she sought refuge in the vast marketplace of Airbnb, expecting to snag a cost-effective option and save a few dollars.
Except the 'budget' accommodation she found was anything but.
What she stumbled upon was an Airbnb listing marketed as ‘Camping Swag Under The Stars’ near Warriewood Beach–with a whopping $1150 price tag for a single night!
There's no catch either–for that sum, you would assume a beautifully decorated room at least, along with a few luxuries to justify the astronomical cost. But nope–the extravagant price tag was for spending the night in a tent in a backyard!
For one person, it was $800, but every time you added another person, it jumped hundreds of dollars.
Adding one more was going to cost $1156 and for three it would be $1500.
You’re probably thinking…‘It's got to be glamping or something more luxurious than those associated with traditional camping, right?’
A magnificently decked-out tent, with champagne breakfasts and butler service!
Unfortunately, Caity thought along these lines too, only to realise the alleged 'luxury' tent was anything but high-end.
‘At first, I thought it was some kind of insane glamping experience for that price,’ Caity said.
‘But no, it was basically [all swagger] and the photos of the property looked unkempt and the backyard looked like it hadn’t been mowed in months.’
‘But the location, the views!’ you might exclaim. That does seem to be the justification carried by the host. The tent's placement gives you the unbeatable choice of setting up camp amidst ocean and valley views, according to the listing.
‘Camp true and cosy under the stars in this waterproof camping bedroll swag,’ written on the description of the Airbnb listing.
The photos showed a tent that isn’t even pitched, and guests will be most likely asked to set it up themselves.
‘I asked her why she thinks charging that amount is justifiable,’ Caity shared.
The host answered saying: ‘Basically this Northern Beaches property has a fair amount of land for you to choose where your tent is pitched. It is in a prime location with ocean and valley views, or by night, very beautiful lights and the ocean can be heard.’
‘A main feature is the large blue pool, balcony, and it’s five minutes from multiple beaches, shops, nature walks and everything else you need.’
‘Sleeping bags, blankets and anything else you need can be supplied. House access for kitchen and hot showers is welcome if you choose,’ the host explained.
But wait, there's more–on top of the hefty accommodation fee, there's a $200 'cleaning fee' as well!
Cleaning fees are set by the Airbnb’s host usually range between $50-$300 for apartment and house listings.
‘After having a look at other Airbnb properties in Warriewood and surrounding suburbs, it seems like they’re absolutely out of their mind,’ Caity added.
‘I think a reasonable price would have been maybe $80 per night, honestly.’
Caity was unable to see if anyone had booked the property. She assumed the listing had been removed or the owner had blocked her as she could no longer find the listing.
‘I don’t know if she’s had any success, but I don’t think that charging this amount of money for the bare minimum is a smart way of going about trying to pad your wallet,’ Caity said.
