BUTTON-SIZED room going for HEFTY price - but there's a see-through catch

We all know that the cost of renting in Australia is pretty high — and that’s putting it very lightly. But a new listing has taken things to a whole new level.

Listed for a whopping $520 per week, a room recently up for rent has been described by many as a 'poo with a view'.

Seriously, that’s what people have been saying about this unit!

The studio type property, located at 22/405 Bourke Street, Surry Hills in Sydney features a small-scale living space with a ‘City Chic’ theme.

It comes furnished with a double-size bed, an induction cooker, a mounted TV, polished concrete flooring — and a see-through semi-frosted glass wall that encloses the bathroom.

The transparent partition is guaranteed to offer full views of whoever happens to be using the toilet at any given time - whether that's you or your guests.

And forget about cooking dinner while your partner takes care of business in privacy; anyone trying to use those two hotplates will get an eyeful if they happen to look over at the wrong moment. Lovely!

The real estate agents responsible for this listing have said that this unique offering is perfect for someone who 'craves simplicity and style'.

Well, the aesthetics aren’t too bad, but we’re not quite sure if a view of the loo that leaves nothing to the imagination is taking ‘simplicity’ too far…

This was not lost on many who saw the listing.

‘How can someone build a bathroom in that way and think it is a good idea,’ a person wrote online.

Another shared: ‘This is my worst nightmare … Imagine having a bloke over and he needed to have a s***.’

‘The bathroom looks kind of like some strange torture chamber, but it‘s the kitchen that will become the main place of torture anytime someone s***s while you are trying to cook a lovely meal,’ added another.

Maybe it’s the virality of the listing, or maybe someone just doesn’t care about having a bathroom liveshow display by default at home, but it seems the unit has takers as the Bourke Street listing has a ‘Deposit Taken’ status as of October 20.

The weekly price has jumped by $140 after it was last listed for $380 in 2020 when images of its original listing circulated online. Despite its features, the substantial jump does reflect Sydney's current rental market crisis pretty accurately.

Australia is experiencing the 'tightest rental market we've ever seen', according to PropTrack director of economic research and report author Cameron Kusher - and median weekly rents have risen by 10% in just twelve months as demand continues to outstrip supply.

Key Takeaways

  • A studio apartment in Surry Hills has been listed for rent at an eye-watering price of $520 per week.
  • The apartment has been referred to as a 'room with a poo' due to the close proximity of the toilet to the kitchen.
  • Despite the apartment’s features, the substantial jump in price reflects the state of Sydney’s rental market.
Rental units available for less than $400 weekly have also halved compared to pre-pandemic levels Across Australia’s urban hubs, they also revealed.

With the average Australian minimum wage earner earning around $812.60 (before tax), the situation looks dire for those looking for affordable rentals considering experts’ opinions that factors like lower vacancy rates and increased migration will prolong the ongoing rental crisis.

The Australian Government for its part offers rent assistance to certain individuals, including age pensioners, but some feel it isn’t doing enough to address the lingering threat of homelessness.

We here at the SDC have told stories of people affected by skyrocketing housing prices, like this family forced to live in a tent, and this elderly couple worried about their finances over the crisis.

What do you think of this story? Would you have considered renting this room with a ‘scenic’ loo for more than $500 weekly had you been a renter? Or would you have taken chances elsewhere for more affordable — and sensible — options?

Just watched the video. OK, where is the fridge (or even room for one), where is the wardrobe, where is the bathroom vanity, where is the heating, where is the cooling, where is the kitchen table, where do you eat, where do you keep your clothes?
I did notice that there is a sliding frosted glass door alongside the toilet. This may well block the view of the occupant but does just about nothing for the noises that emanate from the toilet area. However, the occupant of the toilet is still in plain view from the bed and front door. Surely there are some health regulations covering this. Also, there should be some community and council rules and regulations governing what constitutes "simplistic" living. How has council passed this for occupation?
If you bought a small farmlet block of say 5 acres and put a shed on it to reside in whilst you built your home, there are a mountain of rules and regulations covering what you MUST have in that shed and how it must be kept.

When I lived in NZ, in the 90s you had to have 2 doors between the kitchen & toilet. Although when I rented a converted garage in Auckland there was only one door. I have nearly always rented where I live but wouldn't in a fit rent that apology for a flat. Compact or not!
