Bulky TV sets

Remember the good ol’ days when not everyone owned a TV, and if they did, it resembled a piece of furniture more than an appliance? Those TV sets were so heavy—almost as though it was designed to deter anyone from stealing them! Did your mum have one of those Fantasia lamps on top of it, too? Share your fond memories with us in the comments below!

Oh for the good old days when TVs were a nice piece of furniture and if you were lucky you had the choice of two channels, the ABC and one commercial channel. We didn’t get a TV until the 70s as being poor it wasn’t high on our priority list as a family. Our first TV was second hand from a friend who upgraded to a new beaut model. No remote, if you wanted to change channel or tune it in, or alter the volume you had to get off the lounge and do it at the TV. Plenty of exercise just there. Little choice of programs, channels didn’t start until 8am and finished by 10pm, in our country area anyway. When dad was in the lounge room everyone had to watch what he wanted to watch which was usually news and cowboy type shows.

I had one of those came home from work one night turned it on and it caught fire.🙀rolled it out the front door onto the lawn and it exploded like a bomb went off.scary stuff.🙀

Wow, lucky you got it outside in time. Lucky no one got seriously injured. Would have been an interesting headline, “ Resident blown up by exploding TV”.

Yes apparantely those bulb thingies were the cause so said the fire man. I was only 16 at the time my first rental house and also a second hand t.v like all the stuff I had.😊mum and dad were horrified as it was their tv.🙀

Yes we had the piece of furniture TV but before that it was a piece of furniture radio which I loved as a little girl and used to sit under it to listen to my favourite kid's programme.

Not only the tv but included into the radiogram. My parents had little ‘comfort’ stuff but my mum worked her sae off to buy that set up. Before that all we had was a 9 volt tranny.

Yes, we had one of TVs back in the day when we actually had to get up out of the chair to change channels! It was great when colour TV came along and seeing my fave shows come to life in colour! We only had 2xTV stations at one point. It was so great when many more channels were available and wow look how far we've come! My parents had a beautiful lamp with a painted lighthouse on the lampshade and little sailing ships would spin around when lamp heated up!
