Establishments display decorations to make their store livelier, more vibrant, and more entertaining for customers. But Halloween decorations, no matter how well-intended to deliver a genuinely frightening experience, may sometimes cross the line!
Family-favourite juice bar Boost Juice is known for its bright, fun and youthful branding. But its latest marketing campaign was anything but family-friendly.
People were shocked to see a disturbing display in an Australian Boost Juice store in Perth, which had been uploaded to social media.
It seemed that in their effort to make the store look 'spooky' for Halloween, Boost Juice hung up some cardboard cutouts of bloodied hands and feet in the Cockburn Gateway Shopping Centre.
So what’s so wrong about it?
Well, if you look closer, the cutouts resemble disfigured human flesh too closely for comfort—much to the shock of onlookers.
The decoration, however, was labelled 'insensitive' and 'too far' by some locals.
It wasn't long before other online users joined the conversation, many of them either in absolute outrage at the decorations or scratching their heads to understand why Boost would choose to do such a thing.
The photo had more than 130 comments, and the reactions were divided.
One mum said, ‘I think it’s appalling to have something this graphic where people walk by. Already some are finding it hard with their kids to even walk into BIG W and Kmart where they have the skeletons and ghouls etc.’
‘I don’t understand what severed limbs have to do with Halloween. This is just appalling to have for a shop in my opinion.’
Another person argued, ‘With everything happening in the world right now, the horrific images we’re seeing of Palestinian children, this is in very poor taste.’
‘There is definitely a line when it comes to this gory stuff and this is too far,’ another mum said, as her daughter covered her face when they saw the Halloween section in shops.
Even among all the commotion, some stood by the juice bar, claiming that the decorations were ‘awesome.’ Some also argued that ‘there’s worse things happening in the world compared to a few tacky Halloween decorations,' and that the cutouts teaches kids resilience.
One commenter said, ‘It’s Halloween, spooky season, not wrap ya kids in bubble wrap season.’
‘Kids being scared for two minutes isn’t a world-ending sort of moment, it’s really not hard to explain that they’re fake,’ another commenter added.
Boost Juice had removed the decorations since the photo gained traction online.
Boost Juice’s General Manager said, ‘As soon as we became aware of this type of decoration we asked the team to remove it from display as this is not part of who we are and how we want our brand represented. This display has now been removed.’
‘Fun Halloween is aligned to Boost, however frightening and gruesome Halloween is not aligned with our brand,’ they added.
