When a children's television show about a blue heeler family can turn $55 into nearly $900 in just months, you know something special is happening. The announcement of new $1 Bluey Christmas coins has collectors and families across Australia buzzing with excitement, particularly after last year's Dollarbucks became some of the hottest collectables in the country.

Following the sell-out success of the 2024 Bluey Dollarbucks coins, the Royal Australian Mint is delighted to release two 2025 $1 coloured coins featuring Bluey and her little sister, Bingo, celebrating an Australian summer Christmas!

The festive coins will be presented in hanging ornaments, perfect for adding a touch of Aussie charm to Christmas trees nationwide.

From dollarbucks to real dollars: The Bluey coin phenomenon

The success of Bluey coins has been nothing short of remarkable. Individual coins had been available for $20 each, while a full set was $55.

However, Yahoo Finance found three-coin sets selling for as much as $375. That's more than six times the coin set's original price.

But the story of Bluey coins took a dramatic turn when they became the target of Australia's most unusual heist. Police were notified on 12 July that 63,000 of the yet-to-be-released series of coins produced by the national mint in Canberra had been stolen from a warehouse in the Sydney suburb of Wetherill Park.

'The theft of these coins have deprived a lot of young children and members of the community from having access to these coins'

Detective Superintendent Joseph Doueihi, NSW Police

The police response was as creative as it was thorough. Police formed Strike Force Bandit to investigate. Bandit is the name of Bluey's dad. The investigation has since recovered most of the stolen coins and led to three arrests, with more than 40,000 coins found in a storage facility in October.

What makes these Christmas coins special

The new Christmas release features two distinct options for collectors. 2025 $1 Silver Coloured Proof Coin—Bluey Christmas Mintage: 10,000 · 2025 $1 Coloured Uncirculated Coin—Bluey Christmas intage: 125,000. The gold $1 coin in an ornament will cost $20, while the fine silver proof version in a bauble carries a $100 price tag.

Strike Force Bandit: Named after Bluey's dad, the investigation continues

Royal Australian Mint acting Chief Executive Officer Emily Martin said the Mint was excited to work with BBCS Studios and Bluey again, bringing festive joy to collectors young and old.

'Bluey is loved by fans across the world. We know that last year's Bluey coins brought joy to many families, and we're delighted to be releasing more this Christmas.'

A collecting opportunity for the whole family

For Australian seniors, these coins represent more than just collectables—they're a bridge between generations. Perfect for fans and collectors alike, don't miss out on this limited opportunity to make Bluey part of your collection.

They also make an unforgettable gift for a child or grandchild—a memorable keepsake they'll cherish forever.

The investment potential shouldn't be overlooked either. Expert and collector Matt Thompson, of Thompson Coins, told Yahoo Finance the coloured coins were so valuable as they had such a low mintage, along with the huge popularity of the children's television program.

The cultural significance of collecting Bluey

Bluey has become a global phenomenon after first airing in Australia on the ABC in 2018. It follows the adventures of a young dog and her family living in suburban Brisbane.

The show's success has made these coins more than mere collectables—they're pieces of Australian cultural export.

The heist itself speaks to the incredible demand for Bluey merchandise. Within hours of the robbery, the gold-colored Bluey coins were being offered for sale online, where they began selling for as much as ten times their face value.

One seller on eBay offered a pack of three coins for almost 600 Australian dollars.

However, collectors should be cautious about purchasing from unofficial sources. They discovered the dealer selling them was a legitimate coin collector who had innocently bought them for AU$1.50 (98 U.S. cents) each. He was paid no compensation for the seized coins.

More than just coins: A legacy investment

For those considering these coins as investments, the track record is impressive. Like the stock you buy through a broker, a coin can be a good investment, and its price can go up or down. If you make informed and selective coin purchases, you can find several worthwhile investments.

The Royal Australian Mint has a strong history with character coins. Royal Australian Mint acting Chief Executive Officer Emily Martin said the Mint was excited to work with BBCS Studios and Bluey again, bringing festive joy to collectors young and old.

The mint has previously celebrated iconic Australian children's shows including Play School, The Wiggles, and Bananas in Pyjamas.

The Christmas connection

The timing of this Christmas release couldn't be better for families. Presented in hanging ornaments, these collectible coins capture the happiness and wonder of Bluey and her family. Perfect for the tree, as a stocking filler or a magical keepsake, these Bluey coins will be on everyone's Christmas wish list.

What makes these particularly special is their celebration of an Australian summer Christmas—something uniquely ours that resonates with families across the country. It's a perfect gift that combines the joy of the season with the pride of Australian culture.
