It seems things are getting real at ALDI, at least according to one shopper who spotted an unusual sign in the meat aisle of a US store.
Sharing a photo of the bizarre note on Reddit, the shopper said that the note seemed to indicate that a meat theft incident had recently occurred in the store.
The note instructs shoppers who are looking to purchase steaks to ask for assistance from staff members as the store stopped displaying them due to meat theft incidents. Credit: Reddit.
The note, which appears to have been written by an ALDI staff member, can be seen hanging above empty shelves in the steak display.
The sign read: “Due to high theft we can no longer put steaks on the shelf."
"Please ask associates if needed. Thank you. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
While it’s not clear how long the note has been up, or how widespread the issue of steak theft is at ALDI stores, it’s certainly a sign of the times.
With meat prices on the rise and shoppers feeling the pinch, it’s not surprising that some would resort to stealing steaks from the grocery store.
In fact, the post prompted other users to share that similar incidents happened in their local stores, with many saying that they were not surprised that supermarkets are now being forced to take this action.
One user wrote: “In a Walmart near me, all meat is locked up. Absolute madness.”
“I go to a few ALDIs that have full-time security guards at the front,” another shared.
A third chimed in: “To be honest, all of the grocery stores here have armed guards. People have been robbed in parking lots at knifepoint for their groceries. It’s f***ing crazy.”
A number of users described the incidents as a "very sad" state of affairs.
One person quipped: “The world we live in at the moment.”
“I volunteer at the food bank, and everyone needs to do this at least once," another recalled.
“Seeing people stand in line all day for a bag of shit that was sometimes two to three days expired or within days of expiring stale bread scraps (not even whole bread, literally bags of crust and offcuts from bakeries mixed together), and random canned items, and get treated like cattle by staff, dude it changes you."
“Help is NOT out there. It’s everyone for themselves. If you’re stealing food, I didn’t see anything.”
A third added: “Sad because all of the theft is only just going to cause prices to keep increasing."
“These companies are going to pass the losses to the consumers through price increases. In the end we all lose.”

We would like to reiterate that the note and the alleged meat theft incident happened in the USA and not in Australia.
It should be noted, however, that similar incidents were reported in the country last year.
What do you think of people resorting to theft to feed themselves and their families? We understand that it’s not the “right” thing to do, but if there’s no other way to feed yourself or your family, is it okay?
