Big W officially reintroduces their ‘Free Books for Kids’ program!

If you’ve been looking for a way to foster a positive, emotional bond with your grandchild (or grandchildren), then you may want to stick around and learn about this exciting announcement!

Big W recently confirmed that they will be relaunching their ‘Free Books for Kids’ program in all stores throughout Australia starting this week.

The program, which was initially launched in 2019, will feature over 2.4 million books from the popular Mr Men, Little Miss series in hopes to provide Aussie kids with better access to books.

“Since 2019, we have been making books more accessible to all Australian families with our Free Books for Kids program. Every family is invited to collect a free book each week for 8 weeks during the campaign period when they visit their local BIG W store, with absolutely no purchase necessary.” Big W explained on their website.

“New titles will be released each Thursday after Free Books for Kids begins, and will be available nationally while stocks last.”

A study about family book reading habits led by Big W discovered that more than half of Aussie parents believed their children should be reading more, with over a third spending less than 15 minutes a day reading with their little ones.

They also found that one of the biggest reasons linked to the lack of reading in households was financial restraints. And so, the retail giant developed the program to help overcome that barrier and provide books for children to enjoy– free of charge.

"Books and reading play such an integral role in a child's learning and development," shared Meredith Drake, category manager at Big W.

“They (books) help spark children’s imaginations as well as improve their vocabulary and concentration skills," she added.

But their heart-melting program doesn’t end there, they are also donating an additional 38,000 Mr Men, Little Miss books to Good360 to support families and schools in need.

At the end of this year's campaign, the big-box retailer will have given away over 16 million books since the program first began. How neat is that?

Alongside the opportunity to collect the series, kids are also welcome to listen to Big W's Free Books for Kids podcast, which will be launched in unison with their former initiative. The podcasts can be accessed through applications such as Spotify and Acast.

Hundreds of users expressed their gratitude for Big W’s program on social media.

“Big W, I love that you continue to give away amazing books to get children to read. Thank you, my son and I love all the stories.” commented one mum.

“My granddaughter loves these books!” said another.

Big W deserves a hefty round of applause. Will you be trying to get your hands on their free books? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
