BEWARE: Urgent recall of a POPULAR item from Coles - “The recall is due to the presence of an undeclared allergen…”

Uh oh! Keep an eye out, members – especially those with certain food sensitivities or allergies.

A well-known milk alternative that claims to be dairy-free has been pulled from Coles supermarket shelves after the major retailer released a contaminated batch.

The product was available in Coles supermarkets, Coles Local and online in Victoria along with Coles Lavington, Deniliquin and Albury stores in NSW.

The 1-litre carton of Coles Organic Unsweetened Coconut Milk was marketed as a dairy and lactose-free, plant-based product but unfortunately, contained the presence of milk.

The packaging misleadingly reads: “Our organic plant-based milk as a healthy, delicious alternative. It’s made with natural ingredients and for you to enjoy everyday,”

“Our Organic Coconut Milk is an indulgent treat, giving you the milk taste without the milk tummy.”

Food Standards Australia issued the recall on Friday, warning consumers of the contamination.

“The recall is due to the presence of an undeclared allergen – milk,” they declared.

“The label also incorrectly advises the product is suitable for vegans.

“Any consumers who have a (milk) allergy or intolerance may have a reaction if the product is consumed.

“Consumers who have a (milk) allergy or intolerance should not consume this product and should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or credit by contacting Coles Online Customer Care on 1800 455 400.”

Although it may not seem that big of a deal to others, people with milk allergies (especially children) can suffer from a range of symptoms upon consuming the substance.

According to Mayo Clinic: “Signs and symptoms of a milk allergy range from mild to severe and can include wheezing, vomiting, hives and digestive problems. Milk allergy can also cause anaphylaxis — a severe, life-threatening reaction.”

This isn’t the first time a popular product has been recalled from a number of supermarkets’ shelves. Most recently, Kinder chocolate products have also been recalled over salmonella concerns. You may read more about this story here.
