Beware: This swimming pool mistake could be fatal to your grandkids

Supervising your grandkids who are swimming in pools is important for their safety. Pools can be dangerous places for young children, and it is necessary to be vigilant when watching them swimming, as even the most experienced swimmers can get into trouble.

Speaking of keeping a close eye on your grandkids who are swimming, did you know that a simple swimming attire mistake could potentially be fatal to young children?

According to a recent Instagram video shared by Tiny Hearts Education, a child's swimsuit colour may help adults recognise them in the water and, more crucially, determine when they are in danger.

The organisation, which works on providing life-saving childcare advice and first-aid instructions to parents, pointed out that swimwear with lighter colours can be difficult to see underwater, which subsequently can lead to adults having a hard time identifying when their kids are drowning.

The clip provided perfectly demonstrates this — when a white swimsuit is dropped into a pool, the pool's cream-coloured tiles blend in with the swimsuit as it sinks, making it difficult to identify underwater. However, when a black swimsuit is dropped into the water, the swimwear is considerably easier to spot.

'Always put your little one in bright or contrasting colours that would be easy to find in an emergency,' the organisation wrote in the video's caption.

'It only takes 20 seconds to drown - little tips like this could save a life!'

Many thankful parents instantly filled the Instagram post's comments section, all of whom said the suggestion was something they hadn't thought of.

One mum wrote: 'Incredible how that first one is almost invisible in the water!'

'Oh yes, of course! Didn’t even think of this,' another added.

Others called on manufacturers to only produce bright-coloured children's swimsuits, with one person exclaiming: 'Only super bright colours from now on!'

Another said: 'Shame they never do decent bright colours for boys!'

Tiny Hearts Education and we here at the SDC hope simple life-saving tips such as this swimwear colour scheme will help bring down the number of deaths caused by drowning.

We hope this article helps you consider doing a swimwear wardrobe update for your grandkids, if needed. After all, this investment is for their safety and will be beneficial in the long run!

Safety is your eyes, while they are in the water or around the water never take your eyes off them.

I would always have floaties on them as well for that extra precautions

And bright colours work well.

As I had alot of kids even when we went out I had colours on them that stood out a little so that I could spot them easy

I always had my two young girls (now both 60+) in bright red swim suits until they were older and had learnt to swim and done some life saving lessons. You could always pick them out even in a crowd in the shallows and on the beach. Good advice I say
