Best-Rated Supermarkets revealed: Discover ALDI, Coles, IGA, and Woolworths rankings in the latest result

Finding a good supermarket with affordable prices, a wide selection, and fresh produce can be an uphill battle. Especially when you’re on a fixed budget, quality and selection can be hard to come by.

Thankfully, help is at hand, as survey results by consumer feedback platform Canstar Blue have just been released.

With 5-star ratings across multiple categories, ALDI has secured the title of Australia's best-rated supermarket for fresh fruit and vegetables, as voted for by 2,722 Ausies who have purchased produce from the retailer in the past month.

ALDI scored 5 stars for Overall Satisfaction, Value for Money, Freshness of Produce, and Presentation of the Fruit and Vegetable Section, while their Variety category scored 4 stars.

This impressive achievement was attributed to sourcing their products from homegrown Aussie farms and diligent inspections of their suppliers' fruits and vegetables—like using equipment to measure ‘sweetness’ and sugar levels and assessing the texture.

Matt Atley, ALDI Australia Group Director of Fruit and Vegetables, said: 'Our joint commitment to delivering the highest quality fruit and vegetables at low prices means our customers never have to compromise on getting fresh produce in their trolleys.'

It was a close race for second place. However, Woolworths narrowly edged past its competitor, Coles.

The supermarket earned a 5-star rating for Variety and Presentation of the Fruit and Vegetable Section, along with 4 stars for Overall Satisfaction and Value for Money. Freshness of Produce, however, was rated at 3 stars.

Coles followed closely in third place, earning 4 stars in Overall Satisfaction, Value for Money, Variety, and Presentation of the Fruit and Vegetable Section. Like Woolies, Coles also received a 3-star rating for Freshness of Produce.

And lastly, but definitely not least, came IGA, which achieved 5 stars for Presentation of the Fruit and Vegetable Section, 4 stars for Freshness of Produce, and 3 stars in the other categories.

The rankings were released at the heels of a report where an Aussie farmer called out major supermarkets for their unrealistic standards.

In a viral video, the farmer claimed that retailers reject produce with even ‘one insect’ on it, putting a strain on local producers and contributing to excessive food waste.

Farmers Pick Co-Founder Josh Ball said in a statement, ‘Five to fifty per cent of any crop can get rejected because of the way it looks, either because of its size—it's too big or too small—or it has a blemish on it. The standards are primarily set on aesthetics.’

Additionally, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) previously reported that food waste across the country costs the economy $36.6 billion each year.

Key Takeaways
  • ALDI has secured the title of Australia's best-rated supermarket for fresh fruit and vegetables, according to Canstar Blue.
  • ALDI received five-star ratings in several categories, including Overall Satisfaction and Freshness of Produce.
  • Woolworths came in second, while Coles secured the third spot, and IGA rounded out the rankings in Canstar Blue's report.
  • The report comes after a viral video showed a farmer criticising supermarkets for their unrealistic standards, which she argued leads to food waste.

Aldi, Woolies hasn't been bad, but I've found a local fruit and veg place which is open to the public but also supplies a lot of restaurants so has to be good quality.

And regarding fruit/veg which is not right shape etc. Woolies sell that as The Odd Bunch which they charge a bit less for.
Checked odd bunch ,would rather spend extra for quality.

ALDI is first choice, spud shed has excellent veg and fruit. Coles would be next. I will never buy fruit at Woolies, bought fruit often, goes off very fast, next day with strawberries .
Only product I buy from Aldi is when they have Tasmanian trout.

I buy mine from Aldi and Spudshed too always good.

I have 3 Aldis within 12 minutes and all are tiny and cramped stores, with very little in it. Fruit and veg is the tiniest section I have seen anywhere and not in good by any stretch. And meat a few cuts and sometimes packages are damaged. Don't cater to food intolerances. I use an independent grocer for fresh produce which last s, and even a month later still brilliant and in better condition than supermarkets that is supposedly fresh. They are highly rated and buy fresh every day from the markets. Love to know where surveys come from. And not just for this- any product. In all my years have never done one. Can't see how accurate they would be.

I guess it depends on the individual buyers for each supermarket. We have no problem with the fruit and vegetables at our local Coles and Woolworths the majority of the time. We scrutinise everything we buy. On the odd time we have looked at Spud Shed we have not seen anything worth buying other than potatoes. Never go there now.

When I find a way to way to preserve potatoes and mushrooms long term, I'll be happy. My two favourite vegetables.
I love mushrooms as well so I look out for when the organic mushrooms at Cole's and Woolies get discounted according to the use by date the cheaper they get. And then I freeze them. You can either freeze them whole or chopped and they freeze really well and then you have them always handy for recipes. And the organic ones aren't cheap so you get a nice little bargain when they are reduced. And I like the fact that they are in a little cardboard box and not sweating it out in the plastic container. Less plastic useage as well. And I buy the Aldi's strawberries also in the recyclable cardboard box not a plastic container and they are delicious. Big,plump yummy strawberries, they are great and reasonably priced too.🙂
