Best International Wine: Humble Aussie shiraz proves that price doesn't always dictate quality

There is much for Aussies to take pride in, but perhaps none more so than our booze!
Just recently, we published an article about a locally produced budget vodka winning first place in a global competition.
Here, we have yet another humble bottle of Aussie-made liquor that has triumphed on the international stage, this time taking home the award for best champion wine!
This year's VINUS International Wine & Spirits Competition crowned Taylors Estate Shiraz 2020 as the best wine in the world.
This award-winning shiraz from Taylors Wines is aged in American oak and is made from grapes produced in the Clare Valley region's Limestone Coast. It is described as 'soft and meaty’, with a 'lively palate' of cherry, spice, faint chocolate, and savoury flavours from the oak.

Earning a spot among the top wines in the world is no small feat, but what makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is that it was achieved by a small, family-run vineyard in Australia—and they're the only representative of our sun-drenched nation at VINUS this year!
The Clare Valley vineyard didn't stop there, though; they also won a slew of additional honours and trophies at the event. The St. Andrews Chardonnay 2021 was awarded the title of White Wine Champion, and the Estate Shiraz 2020 was awarded the title of Best Australian Wine.
Argentina has served as the host nation for the VINUS International Wine & Spirits Competition every year since it began in 2015.
'It's a special day at the winery when we receive news about an international trophy win, but to receive three major prizes – that's something else,' said third-generation winemaker and CEO of Taylors Wines, Mitchell Taylor.
'We're particularly excited that our Estate Shiraz – a wine we've produced since our very first vintage in the early 70s – was recognised as the wine of show against entrants from all over the world,' he continued.
'We're proud of our Estate Shiraz's reputation as one of Australia's top value-for-money wines. This award is a testament to our winemaking team and their ability to produce a wine that's been loved worldwide for more than 50 years.'

The family, like many others in the tourism and hospitality industry, has had a rough go of things over the past two years.
Australia's wine exports have fallen in recent years, due in large part to China's persistent trade sanctions and the general economic impacts of the pandemic.
'It's been a challenging few years, but the Australian wine industry is resilient. Despite the obstacles, there are some green shoots of optimism and excitement as we welcome more and more international travellers to our wine regions,' added Mr Taylor.
'Through awards like this, we're able to promote the story of quality Australian wine to the world.'
The Taylors Estate Shiraz 2020 can be purchased for $22 from retailers in Australia like Liquorland and BWS. Also, as of this writing, you can get it for $16.50 through the Taylors Wines website.
Well, what do you folks think? Even though it's about a week late, we still believe this would be a great Father's Day present!
