Be the first to own a piece of history: 2024 King Charles coins to be released in Australia

Coin collecting is a fascinating hobby that allows enthusiasts to hold a piece of history in their hands.

For Australians, 2024 promises a truly unique opportunity—to be among the very first people in the world to mint and own coins featuring the image of our new monarch, King Charles III.

The Royal Australian Mint, located in Canberra, is the sole producer of Australia's circulating coins.

It's a place where history, culture, and craftsmanship intersect.

This New Year's Eve, the Mint is inviting all Australians to participate in a special event that will mark the end of an era and the beginning of a new one.

On the last day of 2023, the Mint will hold a ballot for the last ten people to mint a coin for the year.

This will also be the final opportunity for individuals to mint their own collectible coin featuring the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, marking the end of an era that has spanned over six decades.

On New Year’s Day, the first 100 people drawn in the ballot will have the privilege of minting the very first 2024 coins in the world.

These coins will be the first uncirculated collectible coins featuring the new King Charles III effigy.

'The first person drawn on New Year’s Day will press the first 2024-dated coin, not only in Australia but around the world,' Mint CEO Leigh Gordon said.

'With a ballot system running, every person at the mint on January 1 has an equal chance of being the selected history maker.'

The Mint's annual Mint Mark Suite theme will also be unveiled at the New Year's Day event and will be featured on the 'tails' side of the coin.

However, there's a catch.

To participate in this historic event, you'll need to be in Canberra on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

For the final coin of the year, you’ll need to be at the mint at 2:30 pm on Sunday, December 31, to enter the ballot.

For the first coin ballot, enthusiasts can line up at the mint from 7:00 am, with the draw taking place at 9:00 am, followed by the minting of the first 100 coins.

King Charles III is now officially on Aussie currency, with $1 coins being the first to be released to the public earlier this month.

The new coins were distributed to banks across the country, who received the first batch of 3.5 million coins. These have now started to appear in cash registers across the country.

Based on bank demand, the remaining denominations will be released progressively in 2024.

Collector and investment coins with the King’s image are also expected to go on sale early next year.

This is the first time many Aussies have had a coin featuring a King.

People have been found selling the new coins online at a higher price, with many listed for more than double their actual worth.

Matt Thompson, a coin expert, suggested holding off on purchasing King Charles coins due to potentially inflated prices.

'The total mintage is 10 million…so they’ll be very accessible for collectors, both casual and dedicated,' he said.

don't the coins already in circulation in Britain count as the 'first'? Was in Canada early Nov and they also had Chucks head in circulation.
