Banned from a business? The election scandal shaking up this key seat

Political campaigns are often full of unexpected twists, but some controversies are more unusual than others.

A candidate in a key battleground seat has found herself at the centre of a debate that has sparked backlash, an apology, and even a business ban.

What began as a lighthearted remark has now turned into a full-blown political distraction.

An independent candidate running for the Sydney seat of Bradfield was banned from a local hair salon after making a joke comparing a hair wash to sex.

The controversy erupted in the North Shore electorate, where high-profile independent Nicolette Boele was campaigning to replace outgoing Liberal MP Paul Fletcher.

Boele, who also ran in the 2022 election, apologised for the remark, calling it ‘a poor attempt at humour’.

The issue was first reported by 2GB radio host Ben Fordham, who said he was initially sceptical about the claims.

‘We thought, “oh, this won’t be true”, but it turns out there’s some truth to it because she’s now apologised,’ he said.

A listener had emailed Fordham, claiming that Boele was banned from a local salon due to ‘sexual comments made to staff’.

The email stated that the salon owner had sent Boele a legal letter as they wanted to ‘protect the young, vulnerable staff’.

The alleged incident involved a 19-year-old employee washing Boele’s hair when she made the comment.

‘She allegedly said that was amazing and I didn’t even have sex with you,’ Fordham reported.

It was unclear whether Boele was referring to a head massage or simply the hair wash itself.

The teenage staff member was reportedly unsettled by the remark.

Fordham also read a listener’s comment that said: ‘If that was a man saying that there would and should be an investigation, so why should a woman get away with this?’.

The tip-off reportedly came from a man whose wife was a client at the salon.

Fordham denied any political motivation behind the report, stating: ‘I’m not a member of any political party, but I do live in the seat of Bradfield.’

Boele later issued a statement, acknowledging the backlash and pledging to ‘do better’.

‘Everyone deserves to feel respected in their workplace and I’ll do better,’ she shared.

The controversy unfolded at Envy Room, a salon in Gordon known for its artistic approach to hairstyling.

‘At Envy Room we don’t just cut and colour hair,’ its website stated.

‘We create architectural styles that reflect every individual’s unique personality.’

Boele, an executive with experience in climate finance, had previously worked with organisations such as the Responsible Investment Association of Australasia and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.

She had also been vocal about gender equality and violence against women, stating that ‘it’s systemic’.

Boele’s campaign has drawn attention for more than just this controversy, as she continues to make her case to voters.

I hope it does affect her chances! That is a totally unacceptable and inappropriate comment to make to a young hairdresser.
Why is it OK for a woman to say it when a man would be in big trouble for doing the same thing.
She talks about being big on an equality for the sexes, then I wonder if she’d think it appropriate if a man said similar her daughter ?

How do you know she said it directly to the young hairdresser. People today are so quick to judge, you weren't there and do not know the whole story. It wasn't a man that said it so you cannot use that argument. Get a grip and loosen up a bit, everyone is to quick to judge or take offence. Don't forget people do not offend people, people choose to be offended.

We were asked to respond to the story , I read it and I did !
I can use that argument because this woman stands, and that’s good, for equality of the sexes. If we want equality then we can’t pick and choose when we want it and when we don’t .

So because she is standing for Parliament her comments are akin to a male making them????? Equality has nothing to do with this whatsoever. It was a female in a female environment and (I think) overreacted to. Gee I was in a shopping centre one day and a guy was in one of those massage chairs and as I passed him I smiled and he stated "This is nearly as good as sex" should I have run off to centre management and reported this guy and have him banned and try to have his place of employment provide a further punishment????? According to your logic I should have.

In the late 60’s & early 70’s I was a young hairdressing apprentice & while this woman’s comment may have been inappropriate, the things that were said to me & in my presence, were definitely eye opening. I had lived a rather sheltered life so a lot of the comments rather startled me but I rolled with it & got on with my job. It was certainly a learning experience & I don’t just mean the hairdressing part. I also very much doubt that a 19 year old today would be shocked or even affected.

Nicolette Boele, an independent candidate in Bradfield? Say no more!

Bradfield has been a Liberal seat since its inception in 1949, comprising of snotty, self entitled suburbs such as Castlecrag, Turramurra, Wahroonga, Pymble and Killara.

"Betty Vu", the director of the Envy Room, is of south east Asian origin and is indicative that she is just another of the snotty, self entitled constituent of the electorate of Bradfield.

Grow up and lighten up!
You and your over sensitive woke counterparts are exactly what is wrong with society today.
Absolutely nothing wrong with her comment..
It did not effect you but you carry on like a pathetic moron!

As that person' comments stated; "(Fordham also read a listener’s comment that said: ‘If that was a man saying that there would and should be an investigation, so why should a woman get away with this?’.)"

And that is 100% correct. If it was a man saying so, all hell would have broken loose.

Listen! I responded with my opinion.
Just because it differs from yours there’s no need for you to attack me.
I have my opinion and you have yours.
No problem.
No attack, was just pointing out your analogy was inappropriate. You are right about being able to have differing opinions and I respect that. However, once you expressed it in this forum you opened the door to comments about it.
