Baby Health Centre

Who used to bring their children to these baby health centres? Back then, this was how many parents tracked their child’s growth. A nurse would be present to weigh them on a scale and give other important reminders. Did you experience visiting this centre back then? Share your stories here.

It was a wonderful service, as it gave young mums a lot of confidence when the nurs3 weighed & measured the baby. all the records were written in your little blue or pink book depending on the sex of the child. You could sit and discuss any problems you felt you had with feeding or sleeping. I found it very reassuring as we were living interstate, without family close by and hadn’t made many friends as we were new comers!!

I always attended baby clinics once a week until they were 3 months then once a month until they were two.

I was surprised to hear this service stopped along time ago.

We had baby health clinics too in England when I was a child and I remember Mum taking my brother who was 6 years younger than me. After the nurse did a health check we were given bottles of concentrated orange juice (yum) and cod liver oil (yuk). I can still remember the awful taste - I think it put me off fish for a long time!

Community Child Health Clinics are still around where I live. I used to take my 2 babies. They were very useful when they started solids, to know what to feed and when. I also took them yearly for a check up when toddlers.

Everybody knew everybody in our village and l loved all the gossip.
My daughter Karen had sunray treatment there She had been born too early at home and it was beneficial to her. l know now it's not good but it was only in a dark room for a minute or two. l hated going in with her as l am claustrophobic
