Authorities warn of growing outbreak as new measles cases emerge

Attention, Seniors Discount Club members and the wider community: a health alert has been issued that may affect you or your loved ones.

Authorities have confirmed two measles cases suspected to have been contracted locally, raising concerns about potential community transmission.

The Chief Health Officer, Dr Tarun Weeramanthri, has made a statement highlighting the gravity of the situation.

'This means there is no local transmission of measles in the community,' he announced.

Measles is not a disease to take lightly. It's a highly infectious viral illness that can spread rapidly from person to person.

For our senior community, it's crucial to be aware of the risks, as complications can be severe, leading to pneumonia and even brain inflammation, known as encephalitis.

The two individuals diagnosed with measles visited multiple locations in Melbourne and Bendigo between 19 and 26 of February.

The journey began at Highpoint Shopping Centre in Maribyrnong.

It included several stops in Bendigo suburbs, Keilor East Swimming Pool, Chemist Warehouse in Airport West, and medical facilities such as the emergency departments of Bendigo Hospital and the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The health department has taken the necessary step of publishing a complete list of exposure sites and times on its website.

If you or someone you know was present at these locations on the dates specified, it's crucial to monitor for symptoms.

The telltale signs of measles include fever and a distinctive rash, but it can also present with a cough, sore eyes, or conjunctivitis.

Initially, these symptoms may resemble the flu or even COVID-19.

It's important to note that individuals with measles are considered infectious from 24 hours before the onset of symptoms until four days after the rash appears.

Therefore, if you suspect you've been exposed, it's essential to take precautions to avoid spreading the virus to others, especially those who may be more vulnerable.

For those born during or after 1966, the Victorian Health Department offers a free measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.

This is a crucial preventative measure, as those most at risk include the unvaccinated, infants under 12 months, individuals with compromised immune systems, and adults who have not received two doses of the MMR vaccine during childhood.

This year, Victoria has identified eight measles cases, a reminder of the importance of vaccination and disease surveillance.

We urge our readers to review their vaccination status and consult with their healthcare providers, especially if they fall into the higher-risk categories.

We at the Seniors Discount Club are committed to keeping you informed and safe.

If you have any concerns or questions about measles and the current outbreak, don't hesitate to contact your local health services or visit the health department's website for more information.

In other news, a two-year-old boy has tested positive for measles after travelling through multiple Australian airports.

Health authorities are notifying affected locations and urging those exposed to check their immunity. You can read more about it here.
