We've all been there – you're mindlessly snacking on some chips and before you know it, you've accidentally swallowed a tiny piece of plastic. You might not even realise it. But did you know that this seemingly innocuous act can have serious health consequences?
Ingesting plastic can lead to several health problems, including digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, and even cancer.
Keeping this in mind, authorities have issued an urgent recall for Smith's brand salt and vinegar chips due to probable plastic contamination issues.

The affected product includes the Smith's Crinkle Cut Salt & Vinegar Chips, which come in 45g, 90g, and 170g sizes, with a best before date of January 15, and were sold at major and independent retailers in NSW and QLD.
Customers who purchased the item are advised not to consume the snack and return it immediately to the place of purchase for a full refund.
The recall statement read: 'Food products containing plastic pieces may cause injury if consumed.'
'Consumers should not eat these products. If consumers have these products please contact The Smith’s Snackfood Company to organise a refund.'
Ingesting plastic can be harmful to your health. For starters, plastic is made of chemicals that can be toxic to our bodies. If we eat plastic, those chemicals can leach into our bloodstream and cause all sorts of problems.
In addition, plastic can also block our digestive system, causing all sorts of gastrointestinal issues. And if the piece of plastic is sharp, it can even tear our intestines, leading to infection.
Swallowing plastic can also disrupt our hormones. Plastic contains a chemical called bisphenol A (BPA), which has been linked to hormone imbalances. BPA can mimic the hormone estrogen in our bodies, and too much estrogen can lead to a host of problems, including breast cancer.
So, next time you're snacking, be sure to be mindful of any plastic that might be lurking in your food. Also, we encourage our members to double-check whether you purchased the aforementioned item and do the necessary steps to get rid of them.
Stay safe out there, folks!
