Australians' tax dealings are about to change soon. See what the ATO is changing

Navigating the digital world can be a maze, especially when it comes to nitty-gritty financial matters.

However, staying on top of these changes is a crucial responsibility.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) recently introduced a significant update to the way Aussies access their online services, and it's essential to understand what this means for you.

Gone are the days of multiple passwords and the hassle of proving one's identity over and over again.

The ATO has streamlined the process with the Australian Government Digital ID System.

This new system should make your online interactions with the ATO more secure and straightforward.

So, what exactly is changing?

If you're someone who uses online services for business, you'll need to get acquainted with the Digital ID system.

This ID system should also affect Aussies' access to the following services: Relationship Authorisations Manager (RAM), Access Managers, or the Australian Business Register (ABR).

This system should be a secure and convenient way to prove your identity online.

Before accessing ATO's online services, taxpayers need to set up their Digital ID.

ATO users need to share identity documents verified by the provider that issued them.

Currently, the government's myGovID is the only Digital ID provider available to log into ATO services.

However, setting up a myGovID is a one-time process that should save Aussies time later on.

When logging in to ATO's online services, users should see two new screens.

The first will ask about your Digital ID provider, such as myGovID.

The second screen should request your consent to share your information with the online service.

These screens should be familiar, especially to those who have used myGov with a Digital ID before.

For those concerned about security, the ATO has sound advice for Aussies.

While Aussies can skip the initial steps after their first login, accessing these services on a shared device is not recommended.

However, if you're using a personal device, you can select 'Remember my choice' and 'Yes, remember my consent' to log in faster.

The ATO emphasised that for secure access, Aussies should always log in directly through the ATO and RAM websites.

For those who need help in navigating this new digital landscape, the ATO also prepared resources for Aussies to read and go through.

You can visit their 'Accessing online services' page for assistance.

In a world where online security is more important than ever, this move by the ATO should be a step towards safeguarding your sensitive information, all while making your online dealings more efficient.

However, for further questions and assistance, you may call the ATO at 13 28 65 (individuals) or 13 72 26 (business).

BEWARE!!

"This new system should make your online interactions with the ATO more secure and straightforward." Please explain HOW it is more secure to have anything digital with the amount of hacking going on??

It's a NO from me...
I was receiving a benefit from the government which I wanted to stop. It was impossible to do it using mygov. They paid me although I had written a letter some 6 months prior. I went to Centrelink armed with cash, my cheque book and a credit card to pay the small amount of money back. They don't accept this. I ended up with a wonderful supervisor who confirmed that my letter re stopping the payment was on file. It was basically CentreLink's fault that I had received another payment. She said "DID YOU KNOW THAT MYGOV IS OPTIONAL" Many people do not want to use it and she arranged to stop MyGov as it does have its problems. I will supposedly receive any further documentation via a letter. This suits me fine. It will indeed be interesting as I may have to do a taxation return this year due to an inheritance. I am hoping I will not be forced into having to do this through mygov. Although, when my Mother died, her last tax return was being done by an Accountant, she did not have mygov. We must not consent to being forced to provide the government with all our assets in the one basket. It is wrong.

This is the ID card that Australia rejected last century. It is supposedly optional. However, we shall see. By joining up, this will ensure that government has complete control over what we do. May God help us all.
Here's one, a paranoid looney. So why will they "control us", when is this happening, nutcases like you should live in a cave.

Oh and here you are on the internet, you'll be hacked soon, the world is ending, blah, blah, blah.

How is the old way safe? People steal from letterboxes to get your information, ANYONE can do that.

You do realise that all your personal information is held on computers, where do you think the ATO holds your information already? On a computer that could get hacked, lol.

More bs we are forced to deal with even if we don't want to!
I'm so sick of all this digi crap & cyber bs identification - thru all of this people will still get scammed, i miss the old days where at least if you were going to get robbed we would see who was robbing us, not that it ever happened living out here in the sticks, now it seems everyone will get robbed at some point in their life - & worse than that no one cares!
This is no doubt another way for big brother to watch & control us anyway, not about security!

Some pretty rude comments/replies here yet again - this platform is starting to reek of other social media that have become anti social & nasty unfort!
People here once seemed to be respectful & kind, but now times there are some nasty ones creeping in with name calling, etc, such a shame if we cant feel safe to have an opinion without someone being horrible any more!

I totally agree with Cheezil each one to their own without being frowned upon upon
People are entitled to their own opinion.. that is the reason we are being asked
to “ share our thoughts..”..
