Australians back campaigns to increase government support funds for aged care homes, a new survey reveals

We previously shared with you the horrifying realities faced by fellow senior citizens residing in aged care homes and the lack of government support for them.

Now, we want to share with you this good news that the majority of Australians are supporting the wage increase for aged care workers.

A study conducted by the Health Services Union (HSU) revealed that 71 per cent of Australians are in favour of increasing the wage of aged care workers by 25 per cent, raising the wage from $22 to $29 per hour.

Additionally, another poll conducted by JSW Research found that 62 per cent of Aussies back the increase of federal government funding for aged care.

The research initiatives came after aged care workers and residents called on the government for support as the surging Omicron cases hit aged care homes and have taken a toll on their operations, putting the welfare of residents in danger.

HSU National president Gerard Hayes said that he hopes that the results of these surveys serve as a wake-up call for the government.

In a speech he delivered on Wednesday, the union president said: “It’s simply inexplicable that Scott Morrison and the Liberals are yet to back the HSU case for a decent wage aged care rise.”

“We will be reminding the public of this every day until the federal election.”

Mr Hayes also called on the Labor opposition, telling them that the poll should serve as a warning for them.

“Labor needs to be clear on its commitment to aged care or it will risk losing support to those independents and minor parties who do.”

Elsewhere in his speech, the union president cited that there are at least 600 aged care deaths during the Omicron outbreak.

Mr Hayes said: “This workforce is mostly casual or underemployed women. Their work is physically and emotionally exhausting and they are at their wits’ end."

It was reported that the national polls surveyed 1600 voters and were conducted online between January 10 and January 19.
