Australian couple’s date night gets scrutinised by Americans, Aussies quickly defend the couple — "As an Aussie, I say that it's 100 per cent normal"

It's no secret that we Aussies are a relatively laid-back bunch. We're known for our easy-going attitude and love of a good time. So it should come as no surprise that an Australian couple would take a trip to the supermarket on 'date night' without wearing any shoes.

Kate McElligott and her boyfriend Harry recently shared a video on TikTok showcasing how they prepare for a night in by playing 'scissors, paper, rock'.

The couple can be seen laughing and joking as they walk around the store barefoot, much to the amusement of their American fanbase.

American TikTok users nitpicked on why the couple are not wearing any footwear, with many admitting that they are shocked and "disgusted" by the sight.

One user asked: "Wait so why is your boyfriend not wearing shoes?"

"Can we talk about the fact he has no shoes on," another pointed out.

While the video was met with criticisms from non-Aussie users, Australians were quick to defend the couple.

One person wrote: "As a fellow Aussie I say that it's 100 per cent normal to go without shoes. I don't know what everyone else is on about."

"Too many non Aussies about the shoes. What are all the 7ft spiders going to bite if you cover your feet up?" another sarcastically asked.

Kate also replied to the demeaning comments, saying: "I have a feeling that this video isn't reaching Australians cause I'd say this is standard??? Is my life a lie???"

"Okay so to explain it's pretty standard to not wear shoes to places in Australia. It was night and we were too lazy to put shoes on."

It's always heartwarming to see young love blossom, and this Australian couple's creative date night is no exception. While some Americans might find their choice of footwear (or lack thereof) for a trip to the supermarket a bit odd, we think it's just another example of the Aussies' laid-back attitude.

I go barefoot wherever it's safe to do so. This means I wear footwear when shopping. If someone breaks something in the shop who knows how far the shards will go. When you clean broken glass at home you always miss that one piece that went further than the others. The same in a supermarket.

I agree! I think it’s disgusting not to wear shoes. I’ve seen parents with shoes on and their kids running around in shopping centres with no shoes. The streets and floors are so dirty with bacteria. It’s totally unhygienic to not wear shoes outside your home.
By association though, shoes are extremely unhygienic things also & many people walk in & out of their houses wearing germy shoes.

Having grown up on a farm we never wore shoes inside the house ..... but we often didn't wear them outside either 🤣
It was easier to wash our feet than to clean our boots/shoes constantly - and, no doubt this will horrify people who think humans should be always sterile; homogenised, respectable etc - but farmer aren't paranoid about dirt and poop 😂 Finding a nice fresh warm cowpat on a frosty morning was always great fun and we washed our feet in nice hot water when we got back to the house!

Can't say l have ever gone bare footed in any shop since my childhood over 60 years ago. Call me old fashioned but l believe this to be un-hygenic. What is wrong with a simple pair of thongs when shopping?

I don't see the problem, feet are in the ground, do you realise how much skin, hair, muscus you shed as you walk around? You breath it in touch surfaces. Feet are on the ground so unless your wallowing in the floor its ok. I really enjoy being barefoot. Thongs spread more germs than you can imaging. Flapping about stirring everything up. No Thanks

Fortunately, l don't own a pair of thongs but regularly wear a pair of leather strapped sandals. A good point was made by another reader about broken glass at Supermarkets. Being somewhat porous l wonder how much of another person's germs, bad & good (?) are absorbed into our body through the bare soles of our feet? Granted, provided our body is in tip top condition these should be broken down, but with covid & spitting etc & not wishing to look like a slob, I will proudly continue to wear footwear when leaving the home.
