Aussies split over delivery driver's move: 'How are these people still in business?'

We’ve all had our fair share of delivery dramas—missing parcels, cryptic 'we missed you' notes when you’ve been home all day, or packages left in places that make you question the courier’s logic (like wedged into the letterbox or tossed over the fence).

But sometimes, what seems like a delivery disaster to one person is just another day in the life of someone else.

That’s precisely what happened to one Aussie, who took to Reddit to vent about their recent experience with courier company Aramex.


The story goes like this: A Melbourne resident received an email from Aramex early Friday morning informing them that their parcel was out for delivery.

Fast forward to Saturday at 5 pm, and the package finally arrived—left in plain sight on the doorstep, visible from the street.

The poster, who was out at a child’s first birthday party, only realised the delivery had happened thanks to an alert from their doorbell camera.

They rushed home to bring the parcel inside, worried a passer-by might snatch it.

To make matters worse, the poster recalled a previous delivery where a double bed was left leaning against their garage in an empty driveway—after midnight, no less!


Frustrated, they asked: 'How are these people still in business?'

Some commenters did agree that leaving a package in full view isn’t ideal. 'Objectively, that is a very conspicuous place to leave a package and easily accessible to any passer-by,' one person wrote.

Another added, 'The only thing that he could have done better was to place it so it couldn't be seen from the street.'

However, the majority of responses were less than sympathetic. Many pointed out that, compared to some of the horror stories out there, this delivery was actually pretty standard—and even careful.

'Wait, what's the complaint here? The delivery guy didn't chuck it onto your porch. You were notified when it was delivered…In a world of absolutely shocking delivery services that often just throw your packages onto a random lawn in your suburb and call that ‘delivered’—I don't see the issue here,' one commenter said.


Another chimed in: 'You just have a chip on your shoulder and expect people to be on your side, never mind you received the delivery, and it was delivered carefully without being thrown; read the company's T&Cs. If you don't like them, use another courier.'

And, of course, the classic Aussie sarcasm made an appearance: 'Thanks for letting us know, Karen!'

Let’s face it—couriers are under more pressure than ever. With the rise of online shopping (especially since the pandemic), delivery drivers are juggling hundreds of parcels a day.

While we all want our packages to be handled with care and left in a safe, hidden spot, the reality is that sometimes, there just isn’t a perfect place to leave a parcel—especially if you’re not home.

Most companies, including Aramex, have policies about where parcels can be left if no one is home.


Some allow you to provide specific instructions, like 'leave behind the pot plant' or 'put in the carport'.

If you’re worried about theft, it’s worth checking if your courier offers options like signature on delivery, parcel lockers, or pick-up points.

To better protect your parcels, consider leaving clear delivery instructions when ordering online and using secure delivery options, such as signature on delivery or collection from a local post office or parcel locker.

Installing a doorbell camera or investing in a parcel box or lockable mailbox can also help prevent theft and ensure your items are safely received.

I had a parcel delivered to house three streets away
Photo was taken when delivered just over the fence near the letterbox and also of the front of the house. Lucky I recognised the house by the side fence. Strolled around until I found it. The parcel was on a bench seat. It had been opened
 
Parcels and delivery of larger items by the post, should be done in a manner where the parcel or item is placed in a safe place, and not easily accessible to the public that is walking by, and not where bad weather can cause damage to it. I am aware that when a post man leaves a parcel infront of the door, they take a photo of the delivered item on their mobile phones as proof of the delivery. However, if the delivered parcel has not been secured or wedged with something, there is nothing to stop a stranger walking on the footpath, picking it up the parcel and walking away with it, or heavy rain and strong winds causing damage to the delivered item. Perhaps the occupants of the house could be notified, via a courtesy phone call, letting them know of the delivery time of their parcel, so that the occupant can be home to collect the parcel, or have the parcel collected by a friendly neighbour in order to avoid theft by a stranger. 🙏🦋

I always ask for my delivery to be left in a particular place in the delivery instructions and it always is, plus they notify when delivered with a photo, if you are respectful to the company then you will always get that in return, it doesn’t cost much to be courteous , it works both ways 😊
 
Yes same company delivered at 12 .45 am left on path at entry way were everybody could see an was not there at 7.30 am in the morning when I got up.
worse company to deal with had no say when ordering.

I have always been notified when a parcel is coming, Australia post sms and email with a date and time and on completion advise it’s been delivered plus photo, if you give instructions in delivery notes they always leave it where requested, most companies do this if you ask them to, and most advise you before delivery and after .
 
This parcel could have been left behind the upright post on the verandah. That way it's out of site. It would have been very easy to do. Just laziness & thoughtless on behalf of the courier.

I wont use Aramex our home is up a long drive way they will not drive in they will not phone us and they will not put the delivery over our gate they just leave a note then I have to drive 38 klm to pick it up even though I had paid for delivery they don't return the money so I just wont use them

Get a Parcel Collect account and have all parcels delivered to your local/favourite post office and collect within 7-10 days. Has worked really well for me so far (although some Amazon senders will only deliver to the home address, they are few)

no it is not. the person concerned should have stayed home for a delivery such as this or any other large items. their fault.

They arnt my favourite peoplebutilesve a delivery note telling them toputgoids. Ehinf veranda post out of site.
 
At least the parcels are getting delivered. I have had parcels returned to sender by Global Express (was Toll) because I refuse to drive 2 hours each way to their depot at Gunnedah for pick up. They deliver to Murrurundi which is my closest town, 12km from where I live, but refuse to leave my parcels at my friend's house in town, at my request with her permission.

Toll had a bad delivery reputaion and changed its name to Global Express. It's a shame they didn't change their delivery standards as well.
