Aussies fume over council's plan to end favourite beach activity: ‘Make life as hard and uncomfortable’

The Australian beach lifestyle is one of the most cherished aspects of living in this country.

From the iconic surf culture to the simple pleasure of a family picnic by the sea, our beaches are central to the Australian way of life.

However, a recent decision by the Town of Cambridge council in Perth has sparked a wave of controversy among beachgoers and residents alike.

In a move that has left many locals fuming, the council has decided to turn off the hot water at public showers at the popular City Beach.

This decision, made with only a few days' notice, is part of a broader strategy to deter illegal campers from using the amenities.

The council's actions have been met with significant pushback from the community, with many arguing that the measure is a heavy-handed response to a complex issue.

The council's rationale for the decision is rooted in the problems associated with illegal camping, which has reportedly led to increased use of public facilities, putting pressure on council services.

The rise in litter and rubbish has necessitated more frequent waste removal, and rangers have been issuing infringements and monitoring the area with CCTV as part of the crackdown.

Yet, the council's approach has been criticised as a 'backward step' by many, including those who sympathised with the plight of the homeless and budget travellers.

The sentiment online has been one of disappointment and anger, with comments describing the move as 'cruel' and 'nasty.'

‘Make life as hard and uncomfortable as possible for those who have nowhere to sleep,’ one man wrote.

For regular beach users, the lack of hot showers is more than just an inconvenience; it's a blow to their beachgoing experience.

‘I swim year-round in the ocean at City Beach, and the thought of a warm shower after a winter swim is something that I thoroughly look forward to,’ one ocean swimmer wrote.

‘Plenty of locals enjoy a hot shower and no harm being done,’ another said.

Kelton Hincks, Acting CEO at the Town of Cambridge council, has defended the measure, stating that it 'aims to keep City Beach clean and safe for all beachgoers’.

‘This was an administrative decision made to address the issue of illegal camping at City Beach,’ he said.

However, he has not directly addressed the community's concerns about the decision's impact on legitimate users of the beach amenities.

The issue of illegal camping is not unique to City Beach or the Town of Cambridge.

Across Australia, councils are grappling with how to manage this challenge. In Exmouth, Western Australia, a new campground is being constructed at $200,000 to provide a legal camping option and protect the local environment from the damage caused by illegal camping.

Meanwhile, in Queensland, Noosa Shire Council has increased fines for illegal camping and is even threatening to tow vehicles believed to be breaking the rules.

Sad that it's come to this but fully understand where the local council is coming from. And cost incurs by every council trying to keep their tourists' areas clean for everyone after people dump their garbage behind is massive. This costs then ends up being paid for by the locals who must pay extra via their rates. And then other jobs that need doing by that Council can't be done. And sometimes the damage that is done to the surrounding areas and plant & wildlife is criminal, which in turns adds more costs or loss of a beautiful tourist spots. And WHY should the Council have to supply HOT water, especial now when portable solar power panels do this for you if wish to use the area and want a hot water.
Where I live, I have watched the slow decline of all our wonderful sites because of so called visitors. Not all of them but most of them.
One more thing, WHY do 4x4 the need to drive on the sand anyway. YES, I own a 4x4, and never driven of the sandy beaches and in the bushland I stay to the access roads. About time humans took care or otherwise it will be gone forever, like several places where I live.

This is a problem beaches/rivers all over WA. Go to Pt Walter or Fremantle beaches after 4.00pm there is at least half a dozen back packers campers parked/set up. They take over & should be going to van parks not abusing free showers BBQ's. Weeks at a time.

A caravan park l once visited timed the water for showers if they did the same that would save water hot or cold
Caravan park I went to had a coin machine to pay for the shower. In New Zealand public toilets were spotless and had coin machines to pay. I'm sure homeless people could probably pay 20 cents for a shower or be given some tokens. The health benefits would be enormous.

Im sorry back in the day in the Sandman Van down to the Beach chase the best looking girls in the world swim surf in the back crash for the night 🌙 up early more beach and being young Aussie boys then home after lunch. We left no mess did not get fined, in fact we used to talk to local police and have a laugh.
The issue isn't with how it was. I've seen travellers in vans use the facilities and even toss garbage overflowing bins and leaving dumped rubbish on the ground.

The councils should place the resources in to fining the campers and towing the vehicles rather than switching amenities off for all.

Switching amenities off unfairly penalises Australian residents who use the beaches, people who pay rates that fill councils' coffers.

Councils forget that these so called freeloaders also spend money in local supermarkets, takeaway shops and buy fuel at the local the servo etc. I think it's discusting that councils can't provide a free hot shower and or somewhere to park overnight instead of having to pay greedy caravan park owners up to $100 per night just to park a campervan.

A lot of young Aussie boys aren’t the same as back then are they ?

Generally speaking, a good idea. Would this get rid of the rubbish left behind, or limit the damage to the area?

I never saw any rubbish in New Zealand, and as far as I am aware councils should be cleaning facilities daily. Perhaps a little extra funding may help. Also treating people with respect and dignity may have a rewarding effect.

Love the idea of coin slots for these but as proven in the past special thinking people smash/break these as they believe they shouldn't have to paid, so they destroy it for everyone.

They should be in van parks. The places they park in are free to the public not free loaders to avoid going to a van park. They park up in parking bays for weeks at a time usually taking up 2 spots to put up chairs washing lines, awnings etc.
