Aussie woman achieves her dream bouclé sofa and it’s all DIY – here’s how she did it!

With the growing popularity of Instagram and Pinterest-worthy home interiors, people everywhere are raving and trying to get their hands on anything bouclé (the French word for ‘curly’) – a fleece-like fabric made from looped yarn that looks extremely soft and “cloudy”.

Popular bouclé items are rugs, blankets, pillows, and furniture, such as ottomans and chairs.

However, decking out your home in bouclé furniture isn’t exactly cheap, and not everyone can afford to shell out thousands of dollars just for the textured look.

That is why this one Aussie woman took matters into her own hands and decided to make one herself.

Sharing on her TikTok account, 23-year-old Simonette from Melbourne says that she initially wanted a bouclé couch she saw on Curated Spaces. However, the piece cost around $5,000, which was way beyond her budget.

So instead, she made use of a $300 (further reduced to $250, what a bargain!) secondhand curved couch she found on the Facebook Marketplace to act as the base for her DIY bouclé sofa.

Before starting her upcycling project, first, she unscrewed all of the sofa’s legs and stripped it of its fabric. Once bare and all cleaned, she decided which pieces to use in her living room.

Now it’s time to dress the couch in new fabric.

Simonette used the $15 supersoft throws from Spotlight to achieve the bouclé look. These rugs have a similar colour and texture to the original fabric and at a fraction of the price.

“I used two blankets on each of these two sections that I'm keeping and I tucked them into the middle part…” she explained in the video.

“I then pulled the blankets and stapled them to the bottom and the back of the couch using the staple gun.”

“And if you end up with some parts that aren't covered with the blanket I used my fifth blanket and cut a rectangle to cover any pieces that weren't quite covered, and I hand sewed the patches on.”

And once the fabric was all good and stapled to the furniture, she added matching $10 Spotlight cushions to sit on top of the lounge.

She further elaborates on the process behind the DIY bouclé sofa on her TikTok video below:

Since posting it earlier this month, Simonette’s video about the DIY bouclé sofa on TikTok became a viral hit online, gaining over 13.5M views in a span of two weeks.

Thousands of people commented that they “fell in love” with the finished result and how they couldn’t believe furniture of this kind usually sells for thousands of dollars.

“I wish I could look at old stuff like that couch and have creative vision like this!! Love this!” wrote one woman.

The whole upcycling process looks like a lot of work, but for the amount that you save? We think it’s completely worth it!

Do you believe in the bouclé hype and are you looking to get your hands on one of these pieces of furniture too?

I have pets so boucle is firmly out of the question. I admire her vision for what could be, unfortunately I don't have that foresight so a wrecked couch is a wrecked couch to me and nothing more.:(
