According to Professor Donald Sands from The University of Queensland’s School of the Environment, this 'hatching event' is not uncommon, and is often associated with heavy rainfall.
Queensland recently experienced significant downpours, which could have led to a surge in insect populations.
‘For insects generally, extreme weather events have a big impact on abundance and their numbers, often contributing to the “boom and bust” cycles in some species,’ Professor Sands explained.
