Aussie student's eye-opening school experiment reveals which stain remover REALLY works

We’ve all been there – going grocery shopping and trying to navigate the laundry product aisle. With so many products to choose from, it can be quite daunting to figure out which cleaning product works best and gives good value for money as opposed to just making grandiose ‘miracle cleaning’ claims on the label.
But one Year 10 student took matters into her own hands with a fascinating science experiment – and people are equally fascinated with the results.
The mum of the resourceful student posted on the popular Facebook group Mums Who Clean, showing how her daughter conducted an experiment comparing different stain removers from Coles and Woolworths to find which one was best.
‘My daughter did a stain removal experiment for her science assessment. Thought I’d share the results with you,’ the mum captioned.
The determined science student set out to discover the most effective stain remover among Clean Ultimate, Vanish Oxi Action, and Sard Power.
She decided to test the three brands against a challenging common enemy – a stubborn tomato sauce stain on a white piece of fabric.
And although the competition was close, a winner had to be declared.
The mum continued explaining that her daughter 'sprayed each stain remover brand on three of the stained fabrics and let it soak for five minutes. Rinsed with water two minutes afterwards’.
Because the photos of the experiment showed a close race between the three stain remover sprays, people flocked to the comments to discuss and decide for themselves which brand deserved the title of 'most efficient.'
‘Results look pretty similar, am I right? Would be interested to know if the active ingredients are the same in each,’ one social media user commented.
‘Looks like Sard was the winner?’ someone pointed out.
While one wrote: ‘I’m surprised by the Vanish...Didn’t do as well as the others.’
However, price, as one smart commenter brought up, is also something many shoppers take into account: ‘Interesting. Not much in it, but the price might well be the deciding factor!’
Curiosity built in the comments, and finally, the student's mum revealed the victorious stain remover:
‘She reported in her assessment that the first one, the Clean Ultimate, was the better result.’
Clean Ultimate can be purchased from Woolworths for a mere $2.15 (750ml), while Sard Power (450ml) and Vanish Oxi Action (450ml) are priced at $5 or more from both Coles and Woolworths. According to the student’s results, it seems that the most cost-effective option was also the most effective stain remover.
However, there was one stain removal spray that was missing from the experiment.
Many were quick to point out that ALDI’s Di-San Spray was missing from the list. This laundry product is considered a fan-favourite among home cleaning enthusiasts and ALDI shoppers because of its versatility.
ALDI’s Di-San Spray is typically used for removing stains, but it’s recently made waves online for being an unlikely cleaning tool for tile grout, car washing, shower screens and more. You can buy it at ALDI’s online and physical stores for $2.15 (750ml).
In one instance, an ALDI shopper found how helpful ALDI’s Di-San spray was in tackling her kitchen tile grout, explaining that she was able to clean it in ‘minutes’.
The woman posted her cleaning discovery to social media and attached before and after results. She said: ‘For years, I’ve used the Long Life Grout Cleaner. I finally tried a different method of ALDI Di-San Pre Wash and a little scrub. Left it for 10 minutes and mopped twice with hot water and a dash of vinegar,’ she wrote in her post.

In a similar experiment, consumer advocate CHOICE also revealed how a DIY solution could deal with stubborn stains and unwanted spots. According to CHOICE, this solution doesn’t involve buying expensive, store-bought cleaning products.
