The music industry is no stranger to comebacks, with artists finding ways to re-enter the spotlight and captivate audiences once again.
Whether it’s after a few years or over a decade, a return to music can be a powerful statement, showcasing an artist's growth, resilience, and undying passion for their craft.
One such comeback making waves is that of Danielle Spencer.
Danielle Spencer, renowned for her unique alternative sound, stepped away from her music career 14 years ago.
During that time, she devoted herself to raising her two sons, Charlie and Tennyson, with ex-husband Russell Crowe.
Now, after 14 years out of the spotlight, she’s making an explosive return to the Australian pop scene with her highly anticipated new single, ‘Regenerate’.
Her comeback single, an operatic alt-pop track echoing the influences of Kate Bush and Kate Miller-Heidke, was celebrated by media personalities like Jackie O, Sophie Monk, and Joh Griggs when it was unveiled over the weekend.
Spencer has described the song as deeply personal, symbolising resilience: ‘“Regenerate” is about finding light after darkness. She added, ‘It’s a very personal journey for me, but I think it’s something we all relate to–-those moments where we feel broken but manage to rise again, stronger than ever.’
Back in 2020, before joining the All New Monty: Guys & Gals to raise money for cancer charities, Spencer shared her career break with Stellar.
‘It was difficult because I always felt that to keep our family together, both of us couldn’t be working, and there came a point where I had to prioritise the kids, where they needed to be and their schooling,’ Spencer said.
‘Obviously, Russell’s career was going gangbusters, and I just felt like, “This is not my time.”’
‘I absolutely love being a mother, and I wouldn’t change a thing, but I didn’t feel I could prioritise my career for a while there. The kids needed a parent who was present,’ she added.
Danielle has come a long way since her career took off with her debut album White Monkey in 2001, followed by Calling All Magicians in 2010.
During her break, she made a few appearances on the music scene, performing alongside her legendary singer-songwriter father, Don Spencer, to support his Australian Children’s Music Foundation. She also made it to the grand final of Dancing With The Stars in 2012.
In 2020, she collaborated with producer Vince Pizzinga on the covers album Lost Luggage.
Now, ‘Regenerate’ marks her triumphant return as her first original release since 2010.
It’s also the first single from Spencer’s upcoming third album, set to be released independently next year.
Fans can catch her back on stage, performing with renewed energy and passion, starting with the OzHarvest Unite to Feed Australia Live! special, airing on the Seven Network
