Aussie shopper cracks lucky ALDI surprise, eggs-citing discovery leaves internet shell-shocked!

When it comes to grocery shopping, we often expect the routine to be as predictable as the sunrise.

However, every now and then, something extraordinary happens that shakes up our mundane expectations and leaves us in awe.

Such was the case for an Aussie ALDI shopper who found herself at the centre of a rare culinary occurrence that has the internet abuzz with excitement.

Imagine cracking open an egg for your morning scramble and finding not one, not two, but three yolks staring back at you from the frying pan.

That's exactly what happened to this lucky customer, who had already experienced the delight of four consecutive double-yolk eggs from a previous carton of ALDI’s Extra Large Free Range Eggs 12pk/700g ($5.19) just a week prior.

‘Last week I posted about the chances of cracking four eggs, each being a double yolker,’ the customer shared with a social media group.

‘Today I got the trifecta!’ she exclaimed, showcasing her triple-yolk find with a photo.

‘Definitely ALDI’s best buy!’

The post quickly gained traction, with fellow group members expressing their amazement and envy.

Comments ranged from suggestions to buy a lottery ticket to expressions of disbelief, as many shared the sentiment that cracking open a ‘double yolker’ was a sign of good luck.

‘You need to buy a lottery ticket, this is rare!’ one commenter advised, while another added, ‘They say it's good luck to crack twins, let alone triplets!’

‘I always buy ALDI eggs and never get a double…a triple though! Wow! You are lucky!’ a third chimed.

The discovery sparked a flurry of reactions, with some joking about the size of the egg and others marvelling at the sheer improbability of the event.

‘That must have been a giant egg before you cracked it,’ one member chuckled, while another quipped, ‘Good, different,’ playing on ALDI’s well-known tagline.

The astonishment was unanimous, with one person remarking, ‘I've never seen a triple yolker before!’

Meanwhile, an experienced hospitality professional contributed to the amusement, stating, ‘I have worked as a cook in hospitality for well over 20 years and never in my days have I seen a triple yolk!’

So, what causes these yolky wonders? Dr Vincent, a food scientist and nutrition researcher, shed light on the phenomenon.

He explained that these uncommon eggs were made due to irregularities in the egg formation process within a hen's reproductive system.

According to him, double-yolk eggs occur when a hen's ovary releases two yolks instead of the usual one, a process akin to the natural occurrence of twins in humans.

‘Technically, if fertilised, such eggs can theoretically develop into multiple chicks (like twins!), but this is extremely rare and usually not viable,’ Dr Vincent explained.

Triple yolks follow the same principle but involve three yolks, making them even more of a rarity.

Dr Vincent discussed that multiple yolks are more prevalent in younger hens whose reproductive systems are still maturing.

Moreover, genetics can influence this phenomenon, with certain breeds of hens being more predisposed to producing multiple yolks.

He also highlighted that factors such as diet and stress can impact yolk release.

‘High-protein diets and certain environmental conditions might increase the likelihood of multiple yolks,’ Dr Vincent said.

‘Hormonal changes or imbalances can also cause more than one yolk to be released simultaneously.’

While regarded as a genetic abnormality, these eggs retain their full nutritional value.

Intriguingly, the current world record for the highest number of yolks within a single eggshell stands at nine, rendering our shopper's discovery of a triple yolk egg appear comparatively modest!

The odds of finding a double-yolk egg are about one in 1,000, but if you do find one, the chances of finding more in the same batch are higher than you might think.

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, an Aussie science communicator, explained that eggs from the same carton are often from the same flock and age group, increasing the likelihood of stumbling upon multiple double-yolkers.

‘First, double-yolk eggs are usually larger than single-yolk eggs,’ he pointed out.

‘Eggs are usually sold in the sizes of small, medium, and large. So if you find a double-yolk egg in a carton of large eggs, the chances are higher than normal that another double-yolk egg could be found.’

The astonishing discovery of a rare occurrence in a seemingly ordinary grocery item serves as a fascinating example of how unexpected events can captivate our attention.

This revelation piqued curiosity and prompted us to consider the odds of encountering such phenomena in our daily lives.

Similarly, the account of a woman finding a carton of double-yolk eggs underscores the intrigue surrounding uncommon occurrences.

These stories remind us of the wonder and surprise that can accompany even the simplest of experiences, sparking a sense of amazement and appreciation for life's extraordinary moments.

I want to know when we are going to have a proper grading of eggs. It seems as though as long as it is in a carton it is a LARGE EGG. Go to your local Woolies and see how eggs of many sizes are sold as LARGE EGGS.

I buy jumbo (800g) when available or extra large (700g) if they’re not. Never in my life have I ever had a double yoker, let alone a triple! About normal for how lucky I am!

Years ago we bought a carton of large eggs and all 12 were double yolks the anticipation when cracking the next meal and saying to my kids what’s the chances of another double.

I heard of a Poultry Farmer who realized that People preferred Drum Sticks rather than other pieces. So after many trials, he perfected the breeding of THREE legged Chickens. When asked if they tasted the same as TWO legged Chickens, he replied " Dunno can't catch the Bastards!!

I once, many years ago bought a dozen eggs from a Bondi Junction deli and got 7 double yolkers but not in the race with the person who got 12.

When I was a kid, together with my siblings, I used to spend summer vacation at my aunt's commercial poultry farm. At the time, the concept of "free range" was unheard of and all this farm's chickens were caged hens. Each morning following the previous day's harvest, we were asked to separate the eggs by sight into trays marked "Large", "Medium" and "Small". Once in a while, we would come across some abnormal "extra, extra" large ones. There could be 10 -12 of these in any given month, and our aunt would allow us to keep them for ourselves, to sell them to her customers for a few more cents than the normal eggs. We would tell the customers that these had double yolks, and on rare occasions, even three yolks! The extra cents were a welcome addition to our daily "wage" of 50 cents each. Emwick
