Aussie couple reveals how to make thousands from troves of vintage items

It's no secret that earning money is not a walk in the park.

In a world where sustainability and financial savvy are becoming increasingly important, one couple combined the two into a lucrative business.

Brad and Jaz, a dynamic duo from The Land Down Under, have transformed their knack for spotting and reselling discarded items online.

Their journey began with a simple hobby—Brad's love for vintage video games.

What started as a quest to collect 90s Nintendo consoles and games for personal enjoyment soon spilled into their living spaces.

As their collection grew, Brad realised the profit potential and began to list some of his finds online.

Inspired by online content creators making a living from selling secondhand goods, Brad convinced Jaz to join him in his venture.

The couple's approach is refreshingly straightforward.

'There is so much money sitting in your house from items you aren't using,' they shared.

'You sometimes don't need to spend money to make money.'

This philosophy served them well, as they turned their passion for treasure hunting into a full-time job.

Initially, Brad would list an item every few days.

As he honed his skills in identifying and pricing sought-after retro items, the frequency of his listings increased.

Though initially hesitant, Jaz soon caught the treasure-hunting bug herself after scoring a rare find at a garage sale.

The ‘adrenaline of treasure hunting’ immediately caught on to the couple.

However, their success is about more than just making a quick buck.

Brad and Jaz have formed relationships with local charity shops and recycling warehouses, often reaching out to them with potential treasures.

This network has been invaluable, especially when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and Jaz decided to commit to the business full-time.

Diversifying their inventory, Jaz began sourcing vintage clothing and exploring other areas, while Brad focused on vintage video games and collectibles.

‘Designer brands are always good, of course, but brands that are good quality and well known,’ Jaz shared, as vintage items from Levi’s and Nike attract buyers the most.

The couple's strategy involves more than just selling; they're also passionate about sustainability.

They volunteer at charity stores, sorting through donations, and have become acutely aware of the textile waste problem.

By reselling items, they're earning an income and reducing landfills.

Their business, which started in a spare bedroom, has now expanded to a warehouse space.

They launched 2AussieThrifters on social media, sharing tips and encouraging others to make extra cash while sourcing valuable pre-loved items.

In 2023, their revenue exceeded $750,000, a testament to their hard work and dedication.

However, as they're quick to point out, this is not a get-rich-quick scheme.

Their success has been years in the making, and they have plans to grow their business further and continue their efforts to reduce landfill.

For those looking to follow in Brad and Jaz's footsteps, the couple shared a few valuable tips:
  • Keep an eye on Facebook Marketplace, local charity shops, and neighbourhood garage sales.
  • Start with small items.
  • Sewing, upholstering, and refurbishing skills are valuable skills for resellers.
  • Look at items lying around your house and sell them.
  • Thrift for items you are knowledgeable about.
For the past years, shoppers have seen a shift in thrifting culture as younger generations now swarm nearby op shops for their newest fashion finds.

Prevalence of online selling platforms like Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace, and eBay brought upon the rise of the ‘re-commerce’ industry.

My cousin found a small booklet from 1966 when decimal currency was introduced. This booklet was to inform businesses about the new currency and contained examples of the new notes. She bought it for 20cents and sold it on eBay for $20000!! It paid for a trip to Europe for them.
