‘This is how you should check your hotel room before you even unpack.’ she said.

The first thing she recommends you do is to turn off all the lights in the room you’re in.

‘Close any shades, and use the flashlight on your phone,’ she added.

This is probably because bed bugs are nocturnal insects, meaning they’re most active at night.

But before you even think about it, don’t bother leaving the lights on all night if you think it would help deter bed bugs. The US Environmental Protection Agency says it won’t stop them at all.


Going back, once every light source is turned off, the next thing Halee says to do is go to the edge of the mattress where the covers are pinned.

‘Check all under the creases,’ she said, also pointing to the crevice where the bed meets the headboard.

Halee explained that bed bugs liked lurking in the corners of the mattress and creases in beds.

‘And also, pay attention if there’s a mattress pad too.’

Another thing to watch out for are small blood spots, which aren’t a good sign according to Halee.

My husband and I have recently had a bad experience with bedbugs in Hawaii. I woke covered in bites, dozens of them on my face neck body arms and legs. Oddly my husband only had a couple of bites. The hotel manager was prompt in coming to our room but more or less blamed us for bringing them, we’d been there for 5 days before we discovered them., we had to leave our room for the day while it was fumigated and couldn’t go back till 9 pm. They had removed the beds and put a mattress on the floor, being in our 70’s we don’t move as we once did so it was extremely uncomfortable. The only compensation we were offered was a box of macadamia nuts. The room was $375 US Dollars a night so not cheap. Two days later we were asked to leave our room again for the whole day. We spent over $150 on ointments and antihistamines. As well as we had to pay to launder and dry all our clothes which was another $100. We were advised to buy new suitcases or we’d run the risk of bringing them home with us. Once we were home I wrote a review that the hotel requested, I only stated facts, did not exaggerate the situation. When I got a reply it was to say they never had bedbugs before we arrived or since!! We were totally humiliated by this public criticism of us. I’m an absolute clean freak and germaphobe. My advice to anyone who is faced with bed bigs is to insist on a refund and a room that has been fumigated.
