Astounding new details emerge from deadly aircraft collision as authorities investigate

A routine journey took a devastating turn for those aboard an American Airlines flight and a US Army helicopter after a tragic midair collision over Washington, DC.

With the aircraft plunging into icy waters, the incident has left many in shock and mourning.

Rescue efforts are underway as authorities work to piece together what led to the disaster while the community grapples with the unfolding tragedy.

We from the Seniors Discount Club extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those affected.

We also seek to understand how such a tragedy could occur in our modern age of advanced aviation technology.

The collision, just before 9 pm local time, involved a CRJ-700 passenger jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew members and a military Black Hawk helicopter on a training flight.

The skies over Washington DC are some of the world's most heavily restricted and congested airspaces, a mere 5 kilometres south of the White House and the Capitol.

Despite this, military aircraft frequently conduct training flights in the area.

Washington DC Fire Department Chief John Donnelly confirmed the grim reality that there were no survivors, shifting the operation from rescue to recovery.

‘Despite all those efforts, we are switching from a rescue operation to a recovery operation,’ he said.

‘We don't believe there are any survivors.’

The bodies of 28 passengers have been recovered so far, with the search continuing under challenging conditions.

Ice, darkness, and murky waters have made the recovery operation difficult for the 300 emergency services personnel, including divers, at the scene.

‘It's a highly complex operation,’ Donnelly added.

‘The conditions out there are extremely rough for the responders. It's cold, and they are dealing with relatively windy conditions.’

Among the passengers were former world champion Russian figure skaters Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, whose presence on the flight was reported by Russian state media.

Their loss adds an international dimension to the tragedy, highlighting the far-reaching impact of the incident.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the crash occurred when Flight 5342, departing from Wichita, Kansas, approached Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The airport has since halted all take-offs and landings and is expected to remain closed until further investigations are completed.

In the moments leading up to the disaster, air traffic controllers had directed the passenger jet to land on a shorter runway and asked the helicopter if it had the arriving plane in sight.

The lack of recorded response from the helicopter to air traffic control's warnings has raised questions about the communication leading up to the collision.

US President Donald Trump expressed his sorrow and gratitude to the first responders, promising to provide more details as they arise.

He also questioned the circumstances of the collision on Truth Social, suggesting that it could have been prevented.

This tragedy marks the first fatal passenger aeroplane accident involving a US airliner since February 2009.

However, a series of near-miss incidents in recent years has raised serious safety concerns within the aviation industry.

As we reflect on this tragic event, it's a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of stringent safety protocols in aviation.

Our thoughts are with all those touched by this tragedy, and we honour the bravery of the first responders working tirelessly at the scene.

In other news, terrified Trigana Air passengers jumped from the emergency exit after spotting flames from the engine.

The incident happened just before takeoff at Sentani Airport in Jayapura, Papua Province, Indonesia. You can read more about it here.

Sadly this sort of thing happens. Looking at it from an outsiders perspective but one who has lived with a military aircraft person for years, there are a number of scenarios. The previous day a civilian jet was forced to do a go round due to a helicopter being in the vicinity. This needs to be addressed immediately or yesterday. Flying with military aircraft in the area needs a priority system that is non negotiable. Suggestions are the military chopper had "right of way". But that may depend on take off time. Also why were they both at the same height. Why didn't the chopper pilot see the civilian aircraft, clear night, lit up like a Christmas tree. Why did he not bank right?? Almost could be seen as being a deliberate move. Sad. Hope they find out what really happened

I can't understand how this could have happened.
Firstly The helicopter should have been able to see the lights on the plane and got out of the way.
Secondly why didn't the flight tower see what was happening.

I hope now that they will put in the right protocols to stop this from ever happening again

My last thought is Are they 100% that it wasn't a terrorist attack. That the helicopter wasn't hijacked?

My thoughts and prayers 🙏 go out to all the family and friends and to all those first responders

And during this disaster and the grief Mr Trump took the opportunity to blame the Biden govt for their inclusion of intellectually handicapped people and disabled people in government employment, once again without any proof that had anything at all to do with what happened.
In case he didn't notice this has happened on his watch.

As if they would employ these people in the flight tower , a highly skilled occupation. That man is a complete clown. He should shut up and let those who actually know what they are doing finish their investigation and find out exactly what happened instead of making outlandish statements.
The President of the USA. What a joke.
My sincere condolences to the families of all those who perished. 🙏

I didn't want to mention it but now you have I will.
I thought a terrorist attack by the helicopter as well, from what I saw on the video it looked like the helicopter aimed straight for it.

When it came up as breaking news late Thursday night and they showed the video, we straight away said Terrorism.
Trump had posted on social media before he was briefed asking how in the hell did it happen as it was a clear night in New York and the helicopter would have seen the planes lights and would have quickly got away from the plane

How many people realise that this air crash wasn't the only one to happen across the world in the past few months?

On 29 December 2024, Jeju Air Flight 2216 flew from Bangkok, Thailand, to Muan County, South Korea, when it overshot the runway, killing 179 of the 181 passengers and crew on board.

Anybody hear about that? Of course not!

For the last few days, we have been constantly bombarded by media reports of the Washington DC mid air crash. Why does this event command so much air time while the South Korean incident garnered nothing more than a whimper, if anything at all?

The USA comprises about 4% of the world's population but gets 50% of the media coverage in Australian media, and probably 95% of the US media.

The US is not the only country on this earth.

Here come the ’faithful’ conspiracy theorists…especially when “Trump says…”
How utterly irresponsible and insensitive to perpetuate internet or personal ill-informed ‘rumours’. How disrespectful and inconsiderate to the families of the deceased and the people whose job/responsibility it is to keep large numbers of people safe when it comes to air travel. By inference, it puts people’s reputation in question - totally without proof - just because some brainless people say so! Also trying to put fear and suspicion into people's minds....more fear based theologies/propaganda.

Classic Trumpism:-
(Sadly, some of you will “like” and “agree” with this moronic comment by Trump
Mr Trump said: "We do not know what led to this crash, but we have some very strong opinions and ideas, and I think we'll probably state those opinions now."
He then criticised diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) hiring initiatives at the FAA, which he suggested had lowered standards among air traffic controllers).

For once we agree.

My deepest condolences to the families and friends who lost someone on that flight. Thank you to all of the emergency responders who are pulling together to retrieve the bodies of those loved ones who have passed away

The amount of coverage that the crash has created is because of unusual circumstances, not because of the place it happened. Understanding why this tragedy happened may help avoid it happening again. Or perhaps we may not find out the complete truth. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve had the truth hidden from us.

I read about the South Korean plane crash from several sites online, another terrible tragedy :( 💔

Where are the 'faithful' conspiracy theorists in here, I hope you're not referring to me. I never mentioned Trump, i'm just going by what I saw in the video and that was that the helicoptor seems to aim for the plane, or clearly didn't get out of it's way!
