Assembly days at school

Who remembers starting the day with a gathering outside, singing the national anthem? As the melodies filled the air, some students would march with the school band while the Australian flag flew high on Monday mornings. Do you have cherished memories of this beloved school tradition? Tell us here.

Knee high socks, shiny black T Bar shoes, uniform crisply ironed, tie front and centre (real tie, not on an elastic cord, like the boys could wear), hair tied into pigtails, hat on….off to school….happy days!!!
Assembly, National anthem, March off to class, let the learning begin…..

I think this is a good way to start the school day. Don''t know why they had to stop as it doesn't make sense to me.

yep remember those days singing God save the Queen, with our Flag flying above and all of the kids lined up together....then a quick talk from our Headmistress and then into class to learn how to spell and count and read and write.....they were great days at primary school with a bunch of great kids in every class. 😂

What about the Bell! Our School had a large Bell atop a limestone column ( about 10 ft high ) and a different Student was chosen each week to ring it ( by pulling a rope ) at Start, Lunch, Recess and Finish. We al got a “ go” and couldn’t wait for our turn.

I recall school assembly with our flag blowing in the wind. We rang the old school bell on Mon morning and all assembled outside on the cement in either very hot or very cold conditions. A lovely small 2 teacher school in the Northern NSW bush. Rainy days held inside in one of the buildings and we belted out God Save the Queen! Girls in green and white checked uniform during Summer and navy tunic and stockings or slacks in colder months Boys looked smart in white shirts and grey shorts or trousers. We enjoyed milk in the playground before class and recited poetry, spelling, social studies, maths, reading and arts...my fave was music. Softball and cricket Fri afternoons in searing hit which caused me to faint! School sports where I would have many ribbons pinned on...a happy and fun time growing up as a school girl in the bush during late 60's early 70's era!

Yes, they were lovely days, good memories, love to go back, simple life and not the worries or responsibilities of an adult.😍I loved the structure, the uniforms, the pride my Mum had in making sure we always looked neat even though she would do our hair with sugary water so it would stay in all day and so tight to make sure it did.🤣Yes, the warm milk in the morning.😝Sometimes if we had the money we would take a paper bag to school with our name on it, money inside to have a pie for lunch, a rare treat for us! Loved the morning school assemblies and singing God save the Queen except I had a habit of fainting in the heat on the hard concret.🤪We had some girls who drummed while we left the assembly area and went to class, always wanted to be a drummer but never was. Trading sandwiches at lunch, not that my trade was ever very appealing as we normally had dried jam sandwiches or good old Vegemite which I like you all still love to this day!🏆🏆🏆

I was the bell girl in primary school. It was a large triangular bit of iron with a big donger. I loved to make alot of noise with it!

Sounds similar to my school days, good old discipline never hurt me and was passed on to my children. My sandwiches wern't the best but mum tried her hardest. I hated dad doing my hair though as he always combed it too hard, I had horrible hair as a child and was teased about it relentlessly. It's still the bane of my life!
