Arnott’s Commercial 1962

Remember this mouthwatering Arnott’s ad? You’d be watching TV when it came on—that ad with the perfect, creamy vanilla slice. It looked so good, you could almost taste it through the screen. And before you knew it, you were in the kitchen, pulling out the SAO or Lattice biscuits to give it a go yourself (or maybe nudging Mum to do it for you!).

Whether it was a weekend treat or brought out for special guests, that homemade vanilla slice was pure Aussie comfort. Did you or your mum make it? SAO or Lattice—what was your pick?

My grandmother used to make the slices with Lattice biscuits. Saos were always with tomato and a thick slice of cheese. At my grandmother's house morning tea at 11:00 am and afternoon tea at 4:00 pm was a ritual with family members and neighbours always dropping in at these times. My grandmother loved it. It takes me back to the more simpler times of community.

I was in Woolies the other day and Arnott's Sao biscuits are $4.00 a packet. Really it's not as though they are chocolate or sweet. Pricing is getting out of hand.
