Are your favourite chips contaminated with plastic? Urgent recall issued in five states!

Many agree that there's nothing quite as satisfying as tossing a crispy, crunchy chip into your mouth while watching telly.

Unfortunately, an urgent recall has been issued for a popular range of chips sold across Australia due to the 'potential presence of foreign matter'.

It’s time to check your pantries and chip cupboards. The Smith’s Snackfood Company Pty Limited has just issued an urgent recall of some of its chip packets sold across several Australian states, including New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia.

This recall has been prompted by the 'potential presence of foreign matter' in the affected products – specifically, small pieces of plastic.

The products which are being recalled include:
  • Smith’s Cheese & Onion in 45g and 170g packets.
  • Smith’s Original (six-pack).
  • Smith’s Original 19g, which is included in the 20-pack Fun Mix.

To avoid any unwelcome additions to your next snack break, make sure to double-check your packets of Smith’s chips’ best-before dates.

The Cheese and Onion chips in question have a best before date of September 17, 2023, with a timestamp between 20:28 – 22:29.

While the Original Six-pack chips and the Smith’s Original chips in the Fun Mix have a best before date of September 10, 2023.

Food Standards Australia warned that eating food products containing plastic pieces can cause illness/injury.

'Consumers should not eat this product and should contact Smith’s Snackfood Company to arrange a full refund,' the recall notice said.

If you have any Smith’s chips with the above best-before dates and purchased them in any of the states listed, then we urge you to contact Smith’s Snackfood Company on 1800 025 789 to arrange a refund.

This isn’t the first time Smith’s chips have been recalled across stores in Australia.

Late last year, authorities recalled the Smith’s Crinkle Cut Salt & Vinegar Chips (45g, 90g and 170g sizes) over fears that the snack packets contained plastic pieces. You can read more about this issue here.

But what happens when you consume plastic?

Unfortunately, microplastics have infiltrated almost every part of the planet. And these microplastics can enter your body through things like contaminated food and water or even floating around in the air. Once inside, they could potentially cause gastrointestinal distress.

If the plastic pieces are sharp, it could damage your gut lining and cause internal bleeding as well.

The chemicals found in plastic have been linked to a range of adverse health effects and illnesses, such as cancer and heart disease, or trigger allergic reactions.

I thought they meant proper chips? Made with potato in chip shape.🍟

Being from the UK I've always known them as crisps, (and still call them crisps) unless we've suddenly moved to America? 🙄

I appreciate this all about the health impact of contaminants in Smiths Chips / Snacks but to be safe just stop buying Smiths Chips they are twice the price they were less than 6 months ago. Buy Generic or Aldi brand to save money and be safe.
