Are you thoroughly cleaning your kitchen? Here are the top 5 spots you've probably missed!

We love a good spring clean—there's nothing quite like having a freshly spruced-up home! But here at the SDC, we think it's super important that you give your kitchen a good once-over now and then, especially the dirtiest, nastiest spots that are sometimes forgotten.

That's why we're sharing with our members the top five hidden areas of your kitchen that you likely didn't know you had missed in your last clean.

1. Kitchen cabinets

We know you clean the inside and outside of your cabinets to keep them spick and span. But what if we told you there's a third step? To get your kitchen as spotless as possible, you also need to clean between your cabinets and the floor!

This part of your kitchen might harbour more than a few surprises: from encrusted, sticky spills long lost months (or maybe years?) ago. All the more reason to get down on your hands and knees and give it a thorough scrub! And if you're having a bit of difficulty reaching these areas, there's no shame in asking for help.

To clean grease on kitchen cabinets, use a microfibre cloth and an all-purpose cleaner. Spray and scrub away the grease and grime in no time.

2. Greasy vent hood

Mmmm, there's nothing quite like a fried breakfast, is there? Delicious... But in the aftermath of all that cooking, it can be easy to focus your attention on the splashes left behind on your splashback or stovetops. The vent hood, however, can be easily forgotten and is always ready to harbour grease and cooked-on spills.

This isn't just an eyesore; it's also a potential fire hazard if left unattended for too long, as it accumulates over time. For safety reasons, we recommend you give it your attention when cleaning your kitchen—and as soon as possible!

The easiest way to clean your kitchen vent hood is to remove all its parts and soak them thoroughly in warm, soapy water for at least half an hour. Once they've had time to get nice and clean, simply give them a scrub with some steel wool or a less abrasive scouring pad and a well-deserved rinse.

3. Under the stovetop

You'd be wrong if you think the area under your stovetop is a safe and clean space. Built-up grime and stray grease lurking there can pose a fire hazard and cause various issues with your stovetop. That's why it's paramount for homeowners to stay on top of it!

If you find any spills or crumbs when you're in there, they need to go—and quickly! Just remove any attachments from your stovetop before cleaning around it. You don't want to face nasty surprises if you accidentally wipe over wires.

4. The top of the fridge

Fridges can get dirty really quickly, and the top of them is normally the most neglected part. They can be a pain to clean, too, with a lot of nooks, crannies, and tight areas you can't put your hands into.

That's why homeowners should remember to give their fridges some love now and then. Grab a cloth, dip it into warm, soapy water, and give the top and exterior of your fridge a wipe-down. It's as easy as that!

5. The toaster

Ah, the toaster. The one that always fires up for your breakfast, morning, noon, AND night (if you want it to be). It stands busy and ready for your toasty bidding.

While you might never notice any grime clinging to your trusty toaster, it's important to remember that crumbs still tend to accumulate at the bottom. If you notice any burnt smells coming from your toaster whenever you use it, it's definitely time to give it a deep clean.

Unplug the toaster and wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth. If it has a removable tray, empty it out and thoroughly clean it, too.

Key Takeaways

  • Many areas in the kitchen often go overlooked during clean-ups, including the spaces under kitchen cabinets, vent hoods, underneath stovetops, on top of the refrigerator, and inside the toaster.
  • Neglected areas, such as the vent hood and under the stovetop, can collect grease and debris, potentially a fire hazard if not cleaned regularly.
  • Cleaning these areas can involve various methods, such as using a microfibre cloth to clean cabinets, soaking and scrubbing vent hood pieces and using a cloth dipped in warm, soapy water to clean the top of a refrigerator.

So, there you have it, members—the five most overlooked places for cleaning your kitchen. No doubt you'll be itching to get to work now, right? We already know what we'll be doing this weekend.

Every shelf is covered with thick white paper to protect the surfaces. The range hood, the stove and the dishwasher have never been used, as good as new, as all the cooking is done outside.

I can't get the screen out now for the rangehood and it's stuck and the oil /grease is building. Can't stand it. It's always been a challenge to get it out. But it was always cleaned regularly. Don't know what to do about getting it free.

some of the screens on rangehoods move upwards, before removing them. If it's stuck, try pushing firmly upwards along the edges if you can......give it a good hit and it might free up. Hope this helps Jennylolo.
