Have you ever been in the car before and just can't understand the directions of a sign, so you have to take a detour?
It can be hugely inconvenient and sour one's initial impression of the area they're visiting, especially if it’s their first time.
Locals were left scratching their heads after energy company Ampol made confusing road markings at a new service station in Pheasants Nest, New South Wales.
With the Wollondilly Shire Council taking charge of the southwestern outskirts of Sydney, Mayor Matt Gould got wind of a photo sent online by a resident taken of the service centre car park's road marking arrows.
The seemingly simple painted directions were baffling, but users online shared how hilarious they thought the signage was.
One person wrote, 'I'm not the only one who noticed.'
Another person commented, ‘Was there last week, turned in and wondered why there was a car facing me.’
'Ummmmm! Confusing!!' said another.
Mayor Gould investigated the issue right away and advised everyone these back-to-front arrows were ‘only temporary.’
While some would blame the Council, Mayor Gould pointed out that the arrows had been handled ‘by Ampol as the owners of the site, not council.’ He also added that a private certifier issued relevant certificates.
‘[Ampol] informed me it’s only temporary markings to manage some issues whilst the site is still under construction, and they finish off the other parking/truck areas,’ Mayor Gould said.
‘They said they will be resprayed to the permanent (normal) markings by the end of November as soon as that work is done.’
However, bad signage also poses a safety risk. If a driver's attention is consumed trying to make sense of a puzzling signage, then it's a moment where they are not entirely focused on the road ahead.
The mistakes of signage can lead to risky manoeuvres and panic braking.
Authorities in charge of making road signages should make concerted efforts to ensure clear, comprehensible signage to guide drivers safely on their journey. The overall stance is that drivers should never have to second guess their next move while driving.
In a recent article, a road sign in Western New South Wales features a sign in a caravan symbol a caravan symbol above an arrow that points both down and to the left. The driver who posted the photo couldn’t seem to depict what it meant, and he posted it on social media to ask. You can read more about it here.
