Amazing news for seafood lovers: Prawn prices have dropped nearly 50% since Christmas!

Calling all seafood aficionados at Seniors Discount Club—we have fantastic news that will have you scrambling for your prawn-peeling tools and lemon wedges! In an exciting development, it seems prawn prices have plummeted nearly 50% since Christmas. Yes, you read it correctly—and what better way for our members to splurge on this scrumptious delight without breaking the bank?

The heart of the matter: What's causing this remarkable drop?

This incredible decrease in prices can be credited to an unanticipated abundance of prawns surging the market. This unexpected prawn boom is largely a result of recent floods experienced along the coast of Australia.

While the floods wreaked havoc on land, they inadvertently led to a huge amount of nutrients from the earth being washed out to sea, providing a veritable banquet for our tasty crustaceans. How's that for a silver lining?

Fishers are reeling in bumper catches!

Our Aussie fishers are witnessing the kind of bountiful hauls that haven't been seen for years—their nets are virtually overflowing with these delicious morsels. This remarkable upswing in supply is urging wholesalers and retailers to slash their prices, allowing seafood lovers (like us!) access to these delightful treats at a fraction of the usual cost.

To further sweeten the deal, there have been biosecurity warnings from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry about white spot disease in imported prawns. So, it's the ideal time to indulge in our own homegrown, affordable option.

Too good to last?

The forecast looks sunny, with this prawn bonanza set to continue until at least the summer of 2023—that's an extended period for us to enjoy more affordable prawns! However, do bear in mind that the abundance could dwindle as the prawn population gradually consumes the surplus nutrients available in the water. So, while the news might be amazing, we should still refrain from getting too carried away.

Delightful prawn dishes to try

Now that you're aware of the sensational price drop, why not take advantage and try some mouth-watering prawn recipes that both you can enjoy, no matter the occasion?

Prawn platter with whipped avocado

How Long Will the Price Drop Last?

While the abundance of prawns has resulted in a considerable price drop since Christmas, how long the savings will last is yet to be seen.

Generally, the abundance of prawns will depend on the nutrients available in the sea, which may deplete over time as the prawns consume them. However, the annual rain cycles, land runoff, and other biological activities are difficult to predict and may result in unpredictable surges in prawn populations in the future.

The recent flooding that caused an abundance of prawns may not have been a one-off event either. Climate change, land use, and water flow management will ultimately affect how and when these surges occur.

Monetary and government policies can also play a role in the sustainability of the price drop. Restricting exports and increasing domestic supply can help ensure an affordable, sustainable supply of prawns in the local market for consumers.

In the end, only time will tell how long the price drop will last. We can, however, continue to take advantage of the discounts and enjoy delicious, locally-sourced prawns while they last.

Key Takeaways
  • Prawn prices have dropped by almost 50% since Christmas due to an unexpected glut in the market.
  • The recent floods along Australia's east coast have led to an abundance of nutrients in the water, resulting in a surge in the prawn population.
  • The large supply of prawns has prompted wholesalers and retailers to significantly reduce prices.
  • The prawn abundance is expected to continue until summer 2023, providing affordable prawns for consumers to enjoy.

The one thing I would never eat is garlic. I hate the taste & smell & we certainly don't need it to hide spoilt meat here in Australia.

what a load of crap. Our beautiful seafood, which is always in abundance, is all sold to Asia. In return, we buy their inferior product. Have you seen their rivers? Sewers, full of garbage and animal and human body waste. This is where their prawns come from, that they export to us. I assure you, if there is a surplus, they will snap it up. Too good for us Aussies.

no cheaper seafood here in Baldivis would love for that to be the case , would certainly buy some 😢

None in St George (Botany Bay) area anywhere Down Under but if it is, then 'where?" Do we have drive to and shop in Tim Buck Too. That's so true and we get the overseas crap. It's exactly the same with pineapples, pineapple juice, fruits, veggies. Our products go overseas and we get their crap.

Senokot anyone?

Where? And, how much is it selling for. Plus, is it Aussie or overseas food poisoning. Personally, I'm fed-up with being forced to buy overseas foods of ay kind that taste like crap.

I only buy Australian seafood after having a severe dose of Segitura from some bassa fillets at a friend's house. Mind you after 12 years in Cairns I was spoilt on the good seafood we would catch on the reef. That may have started the build-up of toxins in my blood as the fish we caught were always large ones. The overseas fish is very toxic & so are the prawns & if you have to buy them you are doing yourself a disservice wait till you can buy homegrown fish. Like everything Australian, it is dearer but well worth it in the long run.

I agree with you. We wouldn’t touch any Asian seafood. Years ago when in Cairns we went every day to a great Restaurant with Aussie seafood. I think it was called Charlies.
I only buy local from here on Mid North Coast.
