From now until Tuesday, May 2, Coles is offering a 10 per cent discount on its $100 and $250 Mastercard gift cards for New South Wales Flybuys customers. It’s presumed this deal will pop up in other states and territories shortly.

You can use the gift cards anywhere Mastercard is accepted, including your groceries, household bills, petrol, entertainment, and more. This is the perfect opportunity to budget for your weekly expenses, put the gift card towards a much-deserved treat or even use them for thoughtful birthday gifts!

However, there are a few things you should be aware of.

Purchasing the gift cards comes with an added fee. The $100 card has a $5 fee, so you'll get it for $94.50 ($5.50 cheaper than usual). The $250 card has a $7 fee, so customers can buy the card for $231.30 ($18.70 cheaper).

Next, there is a cap of five gift cards per customer. So, if you purchase five $250 gift cards, you could potentially save a whopping $93.50 altogether.

While this option requires a substantial upfront payment, it's worth considering for those who have money to spare.

Additionally, Coles Gift Cards are not redeemable on Coles Online or at Coles Express and are not redeemable for cash or credit payments or store accounts. The gift cards also cannot be used to purchase other gift cards.

With the average household spending $185 a week on groceries (an increase of $37 a week from last year), according to the experts at Finder, this saving could come in really handy for those looking to stretch their weekly budgets.

Coles stated that they knew many of their customers have been looking for ways to stretch their weekly budget as prices continue to increase.

Deb Galle, Coles’ General Manager for Health and Home, said: ‘The 10 per cent off selected Coles Mastercard Gift Cards will provide some temporary relief on everyday expenses, as the gift cards can be used on anything from the weekly shop to paying the household bills.’

‘If you’ve been saving up for something special, this could also be the time to make that purchase,’ the general manager continued.

Unfortunately, the discounts are only available at Coles supermarkets in New South Wales. To claim the discount, shoppers must be a Flybuys member.

Be warned, however, that there is a barcode sticker scam making rounds in local supermarkets. This issue was brought to light late last year when a couple was swindled out of $200 after purchasing a Woolworths gift card that had been tampered with.

The scam involves criminals placing fraudulent barcode stickers over the original barcode found on the back of the gift cards.

These correspond to a card that’s already in the possession of the con artists. So, when the fraudulent card has funds added to it by the victim, it is transferred directly into the scammer’s card that’s linked to the tampered barcode sticker.

Upon further inspection, it was revealed that someone had planted the gift card in the store where the couple bought theirs. According to reports, that particular Woolworths gift card was not one that Woolworths kept in stock at the time.

What’s even more concerning is that police have said that they have not seen cases of this barcode scam before. This is what prompted Woolworths to release a statement warning their customers.

‘Our store teams have been trained to support customers who may have been impacted by gift card-related scams,’ they shared before adding that customers should check the back of the barcode whenever they purchase any gift cards to make sure it hasn’t been replaced or tampered with.

I bought a $100 Prepaid Coles Mastercard in March 2023. In April 2023, I unpacked the package to check online the balance before using the card. To my surprise, the card did not show the full balance of $100. There were several transactions already made. I took up with Mastercard and the matter is now with Incomm Payments Dispute Resolution. According to them, the dispute process can take between 45 – 90 days. I am trying to inform the public that fraudulent transactions can happen even if the card is in the sealed pack form. I am hoping I will get a full refund.

My personal opinion is that these cards should not be readily available in stands in the Supermarkets. Makes them way to easy to be tampered with. Purchase of cards should be via a Cashier.

Buying 5 cards and saving $93 would be amazing but who can afford 232 × 5 =$1160 in one go

I don't think I would bother only buying $100 saving $5.50 and chancing something was wrong with it like others have said, not worth the stress

I heard about this before. Someone that works in were the cards were produced, packaged were putting a separate stick-on barcode over the original one so that monies went to them, or I believe thousands of these cards and their barcodes were scanned and the culprits somehow linked up when a card was purchased and therefore active. The culprits then went on a spending spree with fake cards with that barcode stuck on the back or re-printed on another plastic card. These cards only cost a few cents to produce themselves and then the barcode with the active $amount is all then added when needed by the culprits.
