ALDI's new $7 vegan 'turkey roast' has everyone talking - does it live up to the hype?

'Tis the season of good cheer, which for many of us means spending quality time with family and friends, as well as preparing and enjoying delicious food.

For Australians who don't eat meat or poultry (vegetarians), those with dietary restrictions (such as gluten intolerance) or those who are trying to reduce their carbon footprint by eating less meat (flexitarians), Christmas can be a bit tricky.

In the past, supermarkets have not always been the most accommodating when it comes to catering for different diets at Christmas time.

However, things seem to be changing for the better, with more and more stores offering vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options during the festive season.

ALDI is one such store that has expanded its range this year to include a new Earth Grown Vegan No Turkey Roast - perfect for any vegetarians or vegans in your family!

The roast retails for just $6.99 and weighs 350 grams. It comes complete with cranberry, apricot and pumpkin seed stuffing wrapped in a soy and tofu coating and a BBQ flavoured glaze. Yum!

Many people were eager to try the item when it arrived in stores on October 26th, with several people picking up more than one roast. Unfortunately, not everyone who tried it was impressed...

One person said: 'We had this tonight. We didn't add any oil. It turned out fairly rubbery and chewy on the outside, and we can't complain about the taste - there wasn't any.'

'I would never eat this again, even if someone paid me too,' they added. Oh, now that's a scathing review. Another went on to comment: 'Very disappointing, but my husband quite enjoyed it.'

On the other hand, one woman said she was a huge fan of ALDI's vegan roast and that with all the trimmings served alongside it; the dish could easily feed three to four people.

'I am not a huge 'mock meat' fan, but this was nice,' she said and suggested basting it with some cranberry sauce for the best dining experience.
Tip
If you want to give the dish a try, follow the package's instructions to the letter; otherwise, you might end up with something less than satisfying.

So there you have it, folks! If you're thinking of trying ALDI's new vegan roast this Christmas but are unsure whether or not it's worth your money... Why not give it a go?

After all; with more and more Aussies now choosing to either reduce or avoid eating meat altogether; chances are you know someone who would love nothing more than tucking into something hearty like this on December 25th.

Sorry but it's for vegans and I won't support zealot activists who thing animals are killing the planet and us. I don't care what they believe if we rid the planet of animals we rid the planet of not only the best way to create carbon sinks, better and moister top soil (which has a cooling effect) but also a much healthier food chain no matter who you eat. Mono culture is not the way forward. I also wonder what they have used in the product that might cause allergies and gut issues. They can keep it

I object to the hype of calling this or referring to this shite as a meat substitute. It is either a meat product or it isn't, so it's time call a halt on this false advertising.

I certainly won't buy this, after all, I like real meat & stuff my carbon footprint. I am conscientious in other ways. As I am exceedingly fussy I purchase meat from Aldi that I know is good taste & value. Too much is being made of this veganism. If they don't want to eat meat then don't, but do not expect a medal for helping to save the planet. I was buying my meat direct from a farm but I find there is more value in buying all my meat from Aldi than the cost of one box of perhaps 5 meals from the farm. As a pensioner, I only shop once a fortnight so I get at least 15 meals for under the price of l farm box. even with inflation at the height, it is.

There are a lot of things this stuff might be but meat isn't one of them. Why do these people who refuse to eat meat call their offerings meat, isn't there something basically wrong with this concept?
totally agree - but then again they can't label it as "formed mushed up vegetable"

Just like Clayton's was, "The drink you're having when you're not having a drink", this could be 'The meat you're having when you're not having meat'.
