Aldi voted Overall Large Chain Champion in Australia’s largest coffee roasting competition

Everyone here at the SDC knows just how much we love our coffee! So we couldn’t miss out on running this story.

For the third year in a row, the beloved supermarket giant Aldi has once again bagged the Coffee Judge’s vote for Overall Large Chain Champion in The Golden Bean Awards, Australia’s largest coffee roasting competition.

The German retailer managed to beat more than 1,100 entries submitted all over the country - with the retailer’s Lazzio brand taking home the prestigious title.

Aldi first partnered with the Victorian-based roasters — Black Bag Roasters — in 2014. Since then, they have created a range of blends, including Lazzio Medium and Dark Coffee Beans, Lazzio Medium and Dark Ground Coffee, and Organic Ground Coffee.

There are eight different types featured in Aldi’s coffee range, Lazzio, which costs between $4.99 for its Peru Ground to $11.99 for 1kg of its Dark Beans.

The fierce competition was against a line-up of bean brewers, including Campos coffee, which brought home the Overall Small Chain Champion title alongside Infinity Coffee Roasters.

“We are delighted to be recognised for the third year in a row and take out The Golden Bean once again,” said Varun Raheja, Aldi Australia coffee buying director.

“Our partners at Black Bag Roasters work directly with the farmers to grow the highest quality coffee varieties for picking and processing.”

“It is our mission that every cup of Lazzio coffee tastes barista-made, so we are so pleased that our customers and the Coffee Judges can taste the difference and appreciate the great value.”

Aside from the Overall Large Chain Champion title, Aldi also managed to win six medals across different categories such as Filter Coffee, Espresso, and Milk-based Espresso beverages.

Campos’ Blade Runner blend, which sells for $16, won gold for the Alternative Milk category while its Ethiopia Boledu coffee took home the Chain Store (Espresso) award.

For the Espresso (short black) category, White Horse Coffee won with its Panama Auromar coffee. White Label Coffee Roasters won in the Milk (Latte) category, while Coffee Snobs bagged the gold in the Filter category.

In Canstar’s Most Satisfied Customer Awards earlier this year, Aldi also won the title of Best Coffee (beans and ground coffee).

The research agency ran the survey from March to May. More than 940 Aussie consumers gave their feedback on different coffee bean brands, rating them based on taste, aroma, texture, packaging, variety, value for money, and overall satisfaction.

Among the results, Aldi was the only one to score a five-star rating for overall satisfaction, but both Harris and Grinders weren’t far behind, coming in second and third respectively.
