ALDI Special Buy has social media in a buzz: 'I swear they're doing this on purpose'

We're no strangers to gimmicks used to boost sales in stores, but one health and beauty-related item got shoppers' attention for an unexpected — but not unfamiliar — reason.
Recently, ALDI announced a Special Buys promotion featuring a Sculpting Facial Roller Set, that got a lot of views online on a popular ALDI Mum's Facebook page… not just because of its impressive features.
The facial roller, which you can get your hands on for just $19.99, includes a long purple handle and two vibrating roller balls on the end, with many users noting its likeness to something else entirely.
As to what… we’ll let you be the judge.
'I swear they are doing this on purpose,' one user wrote, while another added 'ALDI; Good, different.'
‘I berated myself for having a filthy mind,’ another user confessed.
Elsewhere on Facebook, others had pretty similar reactions.
One poster summed up his disbelief over the ALDI buy in one word: ‘Seriously?’
And in response, many took their sweet time humouring the poster.
‘Let me know how it goes bro,’ one commenter said. ‘Just be gentle.’
‘“Facial”, huh?’ another teased.
And on yet another post asking pretty much the same thing, another comment said in jest: ‘It’s a face massager mate! Get your mind out of the gutter.’
In response to the comments, an ALDI spokesperson pointed out that the item is meant to be used on the face, as instructed on the packaging.
'We can confirm that the vibrating Sculpting Facial Roller feels very, very good. On the face. Where it belongs,' the spokesperson said.
'We strongly encourage customers to read the instructions to ensure they are enjoying the product as intended.'
The Sculpting Facial Roller Set will be available in stores from February 25 as part of ALDI’s Special Buys program.
The development comes as Kmart also recently released an item that users also poked fun at online.
Their Mini Hair Remover tool, sold at $12, had people in stitches for the same reasons.
‘Seriously thought it was an aid for the bedroom! OMG, who designs these items?!’ one person asked, which is one thing we’re also thinking about over here at the SDC.
Our very own member @Sharon55 even said: ‘If someone buys one, just go to the self-serve checkout LOL.’
Self-serve checkout for a ‘self-serve’ item… Kidding!
We do take note that not everyone thinks these kinds of observations are even something to write about and that’s understandable.
But when we see something we laughed at, we simply want to share the fun!
That said, these funny coincidences aren’t confined to massagers.
Creative Aussies have found them everywhere, from perfumes, children’s toys (with the words ‘Rub Me!’ on a very unfortunate spot), Christmas Wrapping paper, bridal cakes, and even on Carrie Bickmore’s The Project script once!
So, what are your thoughts on the latest cheeky retailer offering that people online have had their fill of making fun of?
Have you had similar experiences mistaking something for another adult-themed item?
