ALDI shoppers are divided over tap-and-go fees—where do you stand?

An ALDI shopper thought her grocery run was business as usual—until she noticed something unexpected on her receipt.

It was only a small amount, but enough to spark confusion and frustration.

What she saw left other shoppers equally shocked when she shared it online.

The woman posted to social media after spotting two separate ‘Credit Surcharge GST’ charges—labelled A and B—totalling 84 cents.

‘I only just noticed it,’ she wrote, asking others if this had always been a thing.

Responses poured in, with many admitting they had also been caught off guard.

‘I noticed it too for the first time the other day. Was surprised,’ one shopper said.

‘I’ve never noticed before either. Appreciate your sharing,’ another added.

‘I didn’t know this!’ said a third.

The fee, shoppers explained, came down to the way people paid.

Depending on the card type and bank, tapping rather than inserting could trigger the surcharge.

‘I always insert my card into the machine and don’t have extra charges. If you tap there is a surcharge. Very sneaky,’ one person said.

Another agreed: ‘Insert your card, just make sure you remember your pin. Be interesting to know just how much profit is made by people tapping their cards and being charged this surcharge.’

Not everyone was willing to accept it so lightly.

‘[It’s] the main reason I don’t shop at ALDI… Hopefully the government goes through with stopping businesses from charging these surcharges to use card, especially as they are wanting to steer towards cashless,’ one shopper wrote.

‘Complete BS!! I don’t carry my physical card on me so it’s annoying,’ another fumed.

When approached, ALDI confirmed that the charge was nothing new.

The retailer said the surcharge applied to all credit card and contactless purchases as a way of keeping product prices low, instead of inflating them to cover transaction fees.

Customers could avoid the extra cost by inserting their card and selecting savings or cheque.

If you thought ALDI’s card surcharge was frustrating, it turns out this is part of a bigger conversation happening across the checkout.

Experts have started warning that these extra fees are popping up in more places than ever, raising questions about fairness and transparency.

One recent story highlights just how concerning this trend has become.

You haven't read the receipt correctly!
Shopping total = $169.46 (for cash or direct debit card) + 0.84 (card fee of 0.50%) = $170.30 as per receipt.
Credit Surcharge for A (food GST exempt) 0.42
Credit surcharge for B (non GST free items) 0.42

At the bottom of the receipt note:
A 00.0% Net 85.33 GST 0.00 = 85.33
B 10.0% Net 77.25 GST 7.72 = 84.97
This explains items: A GST exempt (food) and B GST charge at 10.0% both include the 0.50% card fee.
Add together equals $170.30 as per receipt.

I only have a debit card but always insert it as I was told by the bank when I changed my accounts it was the cheapest option so that is what I do.

It's always been there. If you tap , then you choose to use credit. If you insert , a choice comes up, savings, credit, cheque. By pressing savings you don't get charged a fee. Always been this way.
My card is a debit card, I haven’t used my credit card in years. I find it annoying that I’m charged as if I’m using a credit card when it’s my own money. I mostly use Apple Pay so it’s not like they have to wait or their money, it’s instant. I must check actually if Apple Pay is included in these charges

These surcharges are not uncommon if you pay using credit or tapping your card. Stores can legally charge up to 2.5% surcharge if you pay using credit and between .1% and .5% if you pay using eftpos. Best bet is to always pay using eftpos and insert your card to keep surcharges down to a minimum.

That is just one reason why they want cashless digital services, did people think it was for security or convenience, no, it's to make money off every transaction, and open u up to scams.

I always use my debit card and have never been charged a fee at Aldi. Just checked my receipt which I kept as I have to return an item selected by mistake.

I used to have that a charge at Aldi when I went to a manned check out and tapped - now I go to a self service one and if I tap I don’t get the charge, but on the one time I inserted the card, there was a charge - weird!

I agree - in the UK you don’t get this when using a DEBIT card, but some places (not all) make a charge if you pay with a CREDIT card

I use cash.. I'm old school and boy ! do some people sigh and comment when I say I'm paying cash and my reply is it is legal tender..Sick off all hidden fees on everything we purchase. Also fed up with Companies (such as Telstra ) charging fees for paying cash to pay bills. Scumbags seem to think they are entitled to our hard earned $$$. Also it is very old news this has been going on for ages.

My Aldi used to have it on a sign that there was a fee. I found out that by inserting the card you are not subject to the fee so have done that ever since, probaly 18 months- 2 years as it only applied to tap and pay. I did think the government put a stop to that recently, however I still insert the card, I also always get a receipt for every purchase, that way you can see if there are any inconsistencies.
I do not know Why any Business has to Charge a fee as When you do you Tax if the bank has any Fee attached to people using they cards they can claim these as Bank Fees, I think they are Double Dipping,

Agree with other SDC viewers, Aldi has always charged a fee on Credit Cards (this charge is passed on as they're being charged by the Banks). When using a Debit Card or a card other than a Credit Card, I always insert the card, enter the savings or debit prompt, and details, resulting in not paying a fee.
The overall savings when I shop at Aldi have been astronomical = up to 30% for quality produce, including a variety of Australian products supporting our local supply channels. I still buy items I can't get from my local Coles store, and take advantage of their specials that are sent to me via Flybuys.

Tap and Go on a $169.46 purchase? I don't think so!

These transactions are limited to $100 maximum. I know that Westpac increased the limit to $200 but changed it back to $100 from 1 April 2023 through Mastercard transactions.

So who telling furphies here!

Another case of "tap and gone".

someone with a brain.

That charge has been there a long time. They used to have signs up about it, I think they still do. I just insert my card and input the pin and there's no additional charge.

Was going to say the same thing. People, including myself, have given this advice over and over again. Its nothing new.

I think you will find it is a bank think not an Aldi thing.
It is a Visa/Mastercard/AMEX thing. Some places put it on to customer, others don"t. Aldi always have from day 1

If I'm told that they only accept card payment? then enjoy putting it back on the shelves
