Case in point—supermarket giant ALDI has recently introduced a new feature that left some shoppers surprised and a little baffled.
Amidst ALDI's well-stocked shelves and discount offers, one shopper chanced upon a trend she’d never noticed before—digital price tags.
The customer admitted that she was oblivious to their existence until she noticed one 'glitching' amongst the usual paper price tags.
The shopper shared her discovery by posting a video of a flickering digital tag on social media.
She captioned her footage, 'Am I the last to realise ALDI are using electronic price tags now? The only reason I found out was because this one was glitching. They look so life-like paper-tag wise.'
Social media users responded in various ways. Some called the innovation 'pretty cool', while others jokingly likened it to 'alien' technology.
'I thought I was going crazy the first time I saw one glitching,’ one shopper shared.
'I never knew this until now,’ another commented.
Others have pointed out that this change will increase the efficiency of the supermarket staff since they won’t need to manually change the paper price tags.
'It saves so much more time. No more running around updating price tickets manually!' Someone remarked.
Another user agreed: 'Probably the best thing ALDI has done, it was one of the most tedious jobs, changing price cards!'
A social media user stated that the flickering digital price tag is not malfunctioning but updating.
'The battery life on each of these is at least five years. When you see the product and price displayed, it is actually off!' They explained.
'And they update automatically through the state-wide system, so there's less chance of having a wrong price on a product!'
Others raised their concern about this change, however. They asked: 'Wonder what happens if they change the shelf price between you buying and getting to checkout?'
'Certain they would be like everyone else and only change while closed,' another replied.
An ALDI worker explained: ‘I was a scanning coordinator, and all price updates are done first thing in the morning, sent from head office before the store opens and sent to registers by scanning coordinator before customers arrive.’
This story follows reports that a glitch in Woolworths' website and app affected the retailer's customers. The issue limited the search function of the retailer, and some customers noticed that popular items were not appearing. You can read more about this glitch here.
