ALDI customer accuses checkout worker of harassing elderly customer who could not pay their grocery bill — “This breaks my heart”

An ALDI shopper has taken to social media to report an alleged "bullying" incident involving a checkout cashier and an elderly customer that she witnessed at a WA store.

Sharing on Facebook, the customer alleged that a cashier behaved disgracefully towards the elderly shopper after the senior could not afford to pay the grocery bill.

"[He] spoke to her like she was an idiot then THREW the items across the counter," the ALDI customer wrote, adding that the worker also allegedly "yelled and belittled" the elderly shopper.

Elsewhere in the post, the customer also claimed that the employee was “derogative and demeaning” to two other elderly customers who were queueing in the line in front of her.

She wrote: “He was then derogative and demeaning [to] the next two elderly gents in front of me, these poor shoppers left the store with their heads hung low clearly very upset from the terrible treatment from this young male."

“When I got to the register, he said smugly ‘Don’t know how she thought $30 could pay for that.’”

It was said that ALDI had received multiple reports from the customer to address the incident before she took to Facebook to share her experience.

She claimed: “I have tried to call the store and head office however, ALDI do not take phone calls and there is nowhere on their website to report this.”

“I would be horrified if my parents were treated like this.”

Facebook users expressed their resentment over the alleged bullying incident, with many saying that they are disturbed by the allegations.

One person wrote: “This breaks my heart.”

“This is terrible, so sorry to hear this still happens,” another added.

A third chimed in: “I wish I had been there. I would have put him back in his place.”

“That’s disgusting, those poor people,” another quipped.

An ALDI spokesperson has commented on the matter, saying that the retailer is currently investigating the incident with the customer who witnessed the act.

The spokesperson said: “Threatening or inappropriate behaviour has no place in our stores and we take such allegations seriously.”

“We have spoken directly with this customer regarding their concerns and we are investigating the alleged incident.”

Have you had any bad experiences with the staff at supermarkets, members? In our experience, we’ve found most of them to be quite friendly, so hopefully, this situation is an outlier.

Maybe he only had a couple of items.
When putting my trolley load of groceries on the belt, I always tell anyone with just a few items to go thru ahead of me.
I always do that as well. But I only had 5 items on the belt which would have gone through quickly. Unfortunately, at the big centre I shop in there is so much rage in the carpark and now it seems to be spilling over into the stores.:(

Tried to push thru when you only had 5 items, what a jerk. Unfortunately the world seems to be full of rage these days, everybody in such a hurry.
Road rage, what is that all about.
Are these people on drugs, oh no, just remembered they probably have mental health issues, today's excuse for everything.

Ageism is everywhere ,notice how many times the age of an older person causing an accident is mentioned, but not younger drivers that more accidents.

I have not been to Aldi for years.
Back in the day, I had no idea how things worked. I didn't know they threw things into trolleys like it's a game of ten pin. Then I was told to move faster. I said, sorry, I didn't know and was answered with the comment to the effect that I must have been living under a rock. I taught my kids about manners, and I expect my grandchildren to behave the same way. They have learned by example. What are so many of the younger generation of today learning? It seems that many of them have not downloaded the right apps to learn how to treat people with dignity that they themselves would expect.
I cannot move fast and use a walking aid. I think the slow factor should be obvious.
It is my conviction that supposedly cheap groceries are not worth being made to feel like a piece of pond scum. I will never return.

Are you sure you are talking about Aldi, they don't put your groceries into the trolley, you have to do that yourself.
Irregardless, no matter where it was you should have asked to see the manager and lodged a formal complaint. No one should be treated in that manner.
I always shop at Aldi and have never had anything but polite friendly service.

Yes, it was Aldi, and it was some years ago. The groceries there went straight from the conveyer belt into a trolley the other end. I think I may have been too slow putting the stuff on the belt in the first place. I guess I was supposed to be there early enough to catch it. I'm glad you receive good service, however, I didn't. I was too startled to pursue anyone higher up. I just accept the shop I went to was not geared up to deal with folk with mobility problems. Life goes on.

Yes, so sad to be treated like that.
