Aldi cancels highly-anticipated Snow Gear Special Buys sale: “Removal was a hard, but responsible option.”

Aldi’s Snow Gear Special Buys, an annual sale held by the supermarket giant, has gained a huge amount of traction over the years (we might even say it snowballed), becoming a favourite of skiing and snowboarding aficionados around Australia. People love it so much that it’s almost tradition for shoppers to queue down the street just to get their hands on the discount apparel, accessories, and equipment that start at a low price of $19.99.

Unfortunately, the discount supermarket recently announced to eager shoppers on social media that ‘deep disruption’ in their supply chains left them with no choice but to prioritise essential groceries.

“We know that many of our customers look forward to our annual Snow Gear Special Buys and we are disappointed to share [that] it will not be in stores this year,” reads a message from Aldi Australia's Facebook page.

“Due to supply chain issues that have impacted retailers across the country, our priority has been ensuring essential grocery items are available on shelves.”

“Deep disruption in our supply chains over a number of months has meant that we have needed to make difficult decisions to make sure grocery is prioritised, and the removal of this year’s Snow Gear Special Buys was a hard, but responsible option.” they continued.

Despite the huge letdown, Aldi reassured loyal customers that their annual Snow Gear sale would make a return in 2023.

“We love the Snow Gear Special Buys and can’t wait to be a part of customers’ snow holiday plans with top quality gear at low prices in 2023.” they said, concluding their statement.

While Aldi didn’t go into details about the issue, many suspect that a combination of external factors are likely to blame, including the pandemic, the surge in petrol prices, the recent floods in NSW and QLD, and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Understandably, several Aldi shoppers expressed their dismay over the canned Snow Gear sale through a barrage of crying Emojis but most customers praised the supermarket’s decision to prioritise the essentials.

“Supply problems are everywhere, so thank you Aldi – food should be the priority.” said one customer.

“Can't be helped, food is a priority over the Special Buys. Thank you for your forethought.” wrote another.

While a third shopper chimed: “We love Aldi. I love the fact you are honest. There is always next year.”

Other shoppers immediately came up with recommendations on where they’ll be sourcing their snow gear this year – such as suggestions on sharing Aldi snow gear from previous seasons among themselves, buying second-hand ones from Facebook Marketplace, and dropping by op-shops near snowfields.
