ALDI announces release of $2.99 “Millionaire Hot Cross Buns” — here are all the details about the decadent treat so far!

There's no denying that hot cross buns are an Aussie favourite!

For those few readers out there who don’t already know this, the delectable treat is a type of sweet roll made with yeast dough that usually contains dried fruit, such as currants.

They are characterised by cross markings — which is usually made from flour and water — found at the top of the buns.

The hot cross buns are also associated with Easter and are usually eaten on Good Friday.

However, it is evident that regardless of the date, we love these irresistible treats as supermarkets release their own range of hot cross buns as early as January.

We previously shared some of the most noteworthy flavours of hot cross buns that are currently available on the market, including Woolworths' Caramilk hot cross buns and Coles' vegemite and cheese and limited-edition jalapeno flavour.

Well, ALDI seems to be jumping in on the hype as Easter is fast approaching, announcing the release of its new hot cross bun offering.

The German retailer has announced that its new "Millionaire Hot Cross Buns" range will make its way into their stores soon!

The Australia-made hot cross buns collection will include mouthwatering flavours such as salted caramel candy, chocolate fudge, and chocolate chip.

And the best part? You can get your hands on a pack of 4 of these delicious treats for only $2.99! What a steal, right?

It should be noted, however, that ALDI is currently experiencing huge delays on their products due to supply chain issues.

The announcement on the website read: “The Trans-Australian Railway outage means that our stores in Western Australia will be heavily impacted.”

While we’re yet to get confirmation on the actual release date of these delicious buns, we found this link from ALDI UK that might help you get an idea of the product. (Note: The product listed is made in the UK, ALDI Australia is set to release an Australia-made product).

I have always advocated that Hot Cross buns for Easter should only be traditional fruit buns with crosses and only sold for the very short Easter period. All the other varieties of yeast bun that are so popular could be sold all year round but without the traditional cross and called yeast buns or whatever just not Hot Cross buns.

Sorry, nothing beats a lightly toasted, buttered traditional and original Hot Cross Bun. All these fancy flavours are OK but please don't call them Hot Cross Buns when they aren't. I remember my mum making Hot Cross Buns and the cross being put in with a knife before baking. Sometimes the cuts weren't deep enough and closed up during cooking, these miss-cooks I was allowed to eat before Easter, the ones that came out well were kept for Easter Friday and Sunday.

Having been diagnosed with Coeliac disease, I'll be only too happy to find great-tasting Hot Cross Buns anywhere - none of the commercially available ones does it for me!

Perhaps a SDC member has a recipe they could share? [Take note, I don't promise that I will make some, but I'd like to have a recipe to read and dream about!]

@leanneh, I SO agree with you on your comment. And (for me) it has nothing to do with religious sensitivities - it's just that there is a season for everything and commercial greed and interests are increasingly obliterating the cultural, religious, and seasonal rhythms and leaving a flat, neutral, grey, mushy sameness.

Woolworths have had some in that are okey to eat and there is a company called happy tummies in Perth WA that sell a lot of gluten free and allergy free goods and they sell the Well and Good brand buns, the best I have tried so far, not sure if Coles have a gluten free hot cross bun yet.

Hundred percent agree with you, I always buy the traditional one and only at Easter time. I am fed up with trendy food churning out from marketing people, everything has to be added with chocolate or salty caramel.

Not a single cent from me, the marketing people try to come out with adapted products to tempt bogan customers and to claim a bonus.
