AFL community mourns loss of legendary figure at 67

The Australian Football League community is mourning the loss of a figure remembered for a remarkable impact on and off the field.

Celebrated for a distinctive style and a larger-than-life presence, he became a true icon to many who followed the game.

Peter Bosustow's journey in football will be remembered for generations. Born in Perth, he began his career with the Perth Football Club in the WAFL, where he made a name for himself as a prolific goal kicker, amassing 379 goals across 141 games.

His rare skills and showmanship caught the eye of the Carlton Football Club, and in 1981, he moved to the Victorian Football League (VFL), now known as the AFL.

Bosustow's debut season with Carlton was nothing short of spectacular.

He dazzled fans with his acrobatic marks and instinctive goal sense, earning him the Mark of the Year and Goal of the Year awards.

But it wasn't just individual accolades that marked his first year; he played a pivotal role in Carlton's 1981 premiership victory, a fairy-tale start to his VFL career.

Throughout his time at Carlton, 'Buzz' continued to entertain and inspire, kicking 146 goals in just 65 matches and contributing to another premiership in 1982.

His impact on the field was matched by his presence off it, where his jovial nature and quick wit made him a beloved figure among teammates and supporters alike.

Ken Hunter, a fellow WAFL recruit and Carlton great remembered Bosustow as a character who thrived in the limelight, a man who could turn the game on its head with sheer talent and audacity.

'I think of what a character ‘Buzz’ was and how much he took to the big stage,' he said.

'I look back on him in his first year, winning Mark of the Year, Goal of the Year and a Grand Final – him being a half forward, me being a half back.'

'He used to joke that I was the extrovert and him the introvert when it was obviously the other way around. He was a unique character and a rare football talent in equal measure. That talent was obvious in Perth, but it went to another level when he came to Melbourne.'

'The Carlton people loved ‘Buzz’ and he loved Carlton.'

Legendary Carlton coach David Parkin also paid tribute, highlighting Bosustow's exceptional abilities and the joy he brought to fans.

Sadly, in his later years, Bosustow faced a formidable opponent off the field: cancer. After a long and courageous battle, including more than 60 rounds of chemotherapy, he was declared cancer-free in early 2023.

However, the disease returned, and he was hospitalised in March.

His daughter Brooke Warren shared the heart-wrenching details of his fight, expressing pride in her parents' bravery throughout the ordeal.

In his final moments, Bosustow was surrounded by his loved ones, including his wife Shelley, son Brent, and daughter Brooke.

According to reports, he passed away after watching his cherished Carlton secure a significant win against Geelong, a fitting farewell for a man whose heart never left the game.

The AFL world has lost a true entertainer, a player who could captivate a crowd and leave an indelible mark on the sport.

Peter Bosustow's legacy will live on through the memories of his breathtaking plays, his infectious personality, and his unwavering spirit.
