The heartwarming story of grandmothers stepping into the role of flower girls at a McLaren Vale wedding has become an unexpected online phenomenon.
All thanks to their granddaughter’s idea of sharing the spotlight with them, they were able to touch hearts globally after accumulating millions of views online.
Since planning her wedding, Michaela Treloar wanted the bride and groom's grandmothers to have an important role in the wedding ceremony.
‘We wanted to include our grandmothers in our wedding somehow,’ Michaela said.
‘We came up with the idea of having our nonnas as the flower girls. They took it on with pride, smashed it, and now they've gone viral.’
The two lovely grandmas, each holding a basket, gracefully making their way down the aisle, leaving petals behind, gave a sight that incited smiles and tender emotions.
The celebration took an unexpected turn by letting their nonnas play the part of flower girls. Apart from winning over the event crowd, the two garnered millions of views across various social media sites for this wedding modification.
For Michaela, the journey wasn't without its hurdles.
It was the challenge of considerable travel for the elderly ladies, particularly her grandmother from Mildura, which almost curbed the plan.
‘My nonna, she's 95, and for the whole time she knew we were getting married in Adelaide, she found it hard to get her head around travelling,’ the bride said.
Michaela mentioned that her husband's grandmother was in tears at the wedding rehearsal because she was nervous about performing the part alone.
However, she was unaware that a pleasant surprise was in store for her.
‘That night,we had a family dinner, and I walked into my whole family gathering around, it all went very quiet, then everyone moved around, and nonna was sitting on the chair, my nonna, smiling, laughing,’ Ms Treloar recounted.
‘My aunty went to her house on Thursday night and by late Thursday night, she was in the car and she was coming to the wedding.
‘There were a lot of happy tears, and it made it extra special.’
Even though the nonnas hadn't heard of TikTok or understood the meaning of ‘going viral’, their involvement in Michaela's wedding touched hearts all around the globe.
Thanks to photographer Josh Huggett's perceptive music selection and the touching video, it resonated with people worldwide. The uploaded video gained almost 10 million views and received over half a million likes on social media.
‘When I was posting the video I quite literally just picked a random acoustic song… the Instagram algorithm knows exactly what it's doing when it auto-generates songs for you to pick,’ Josh detailed.

‘It hits that heartstring straight away… [the video is] the perfect concoction of people saying they want to do that with their grandma, teamed with people saying they wish they could do that with their grandma now that they'd passed,’ he added.
‘Everybody could relate to the video in one way.’
