Many Aussies will remember the thrill of clutching a frozen, brightly coloured pyramid ice block on a sweltering summer’s day. For decades, Sunnyboys were the undisputed kings of the schoolyard tuckshop and the corner milk bar—a rite of passage for generations of kids across the country.

So, when a new frozen treat popped up on Woolworths shelves recently, shoppers did a double take—and then made a quick dash to the freezer aisle.

A sweet slice of childhood: remembering the Sunnyboy legacy

Excitement started to build after social media user Kate Elizabeth Sharp shared her surprise at spotting Sun Lolly ice blocks ($6.90 a box) at her local Woolies. ‘Are Sunnyboys officially back? I just spotted this at Woolworths,’ she said, showing off the mango and raspberry flavours.

The post quickly gained attention, with thousands of nostalgic Aussies chiming in to share their excitement—and their memories.

For those who might need a refresher, Sunnyboys were a playground staple from the 1960s right through to the 1990s. Their iconic pyramid-shaped packaging and bold, tangy flavours—Orange Explosion, Razz Raspberry, Zap Lime, and Glug Cola, to name a few—were as much a part of summer as backyard cricket and zinc cream.

Special editions like Pineapple Pow and Buzz Blackcurrant only added to the legend. For just a few coins, you could cool off and enjoy a sweet treat with your mates.

Sadly, in 2016, The Daily Juice Co. announced the end of Sunnyboy production, citing declining demand. The news hit Aussies hard, with social media flooded by tributes and laments for the beloved ice block.

A new frozen favourite takes the spotlight

But now, Sun Lolly has arrived to fill the Sunnyboy-shaped hole left in Aussie hearts—and freezers. While not an exact replica (the packaging is a little different, and the brand comes from Denmark rather than being homegrown), Sun Lolly’s fruity flavours and icy goodness have struck a chord with shoppers.

The brand first launched in Denmark in 1979 with Champagne (grape), Pineapple, and Orange flavours, marketed with cheeky ads and catchy slogans. Over the years, it gained a cult following overseas before slowly filtering into Australian supermarkets—and now, it’s finally getting its moment in the Australian sun.

Some eagle-eyed shoppers say they’d spotted Sun Lolly in discount stores like The Reject Shop before, but Woolworths’ decision to stock them has brought the treat into the mainstream.

‘The mango ones are so good!’ raved one shopper online. ‘The cola ones are my favourites—they’ve been around for years!’ added another.

Many admitted they had to look twice when they saw the familiar shape and colours in the freezer section.

Of course, for many, nothing will ever quite match the experience of tearing open a Sunnyboy at school, juice dribbling down your chin as you tried to squeeze out every last drop.
‘Nothing will ever be the same as ripping open a Sunnyboy at school,’ one nostalgic shopper wrote. ‘But these are pretty close.’

Cool treats, warm memories

It’s not just about the taste—it’s about the memories.

For many, these icy treats are a portal back to simpler times: summer holidays, sticky fingers, and the joy of a cold snack on a hot day. And now, a new generation of Aussies can discover the fun for themselves.

If you’re keen to relive your childhood—or introduce the grandkids to a classic summer treat—you can find Sun Lolly in the freezer section at Woolworths.

With flavours like mango, raspberry, and cola, there’s something for everyone. Who knows—maybe you’ll even start a new family tradition!

I have been buying the orange and cola versions from Coles and Woolies for a few years. They are not a new product.
