Long overdue. People in aged care should have proper nutrition.
 
Great Initiativ. However, nutritious food is one thing but of no use if it is not fed to those who cannot manage to do it themselves anymore! I have attended nursing homes in the past simply to ensure that my friends were fed & hydrated. It is no use to give some clients drinks which are out of reach & expect them to cope. They become dehydrated etc. In regard to in-home aged care. My brother gets his dinners from Lite & Easy. They are nutritious, varied & he really enjoys them.

OMG. If I can keep my beloved elderly mother out of nursing care, I will be forever thankful.
Those places are downright dishonest and non caring.

I worked in management of an aged persons hostel twelve years ago and even then we had 4 weekly rotating menus designed by a dietitian and summer and winter menus to allow for seasonal choices. We also spoke to each resident each morning, told them what was on the menu and offered them an alternative meal if they didn't like what was on that day. We also had monthly resident meetings and discussed meals and asked residents for ideas of what they would like to see offered. All meals were cooked on the premises with no bulk foods cooked elsewhere. I totally agree good nutritious food is a right for every resident. We all look forward to our meals I'm sure and when you are in Aged care it is often one of the highlights of the day.

You can tell the difference between a well run age care facility and run down age care facility by being there at meal time. They might look the same on the outside but when it comes to food, that is where they will skimp and scrape together some really undesirable mush.

Why hasn't the Government put in place health and nutritionist inspectors going to all Aged Care facilities unannounced and sending back reports on their findings. That will keep those facilities on their toes.

In February, reports emerged comparing the dietary standards of aged care facilities with those of prisons, with some prisoners enjoying higher quality standards of food.



In certain prisons, inmates can plan their own meals and order ingredients, allowing them to cook a variety of delicious dishes from different cultures worldwide. In contrast, residents of some aged care facilities are allegedly served inadequate and unappetising meals, such as a small portion of fish fingers with tartare sauce and a handful of soggy chips.

These findings show that it's crucial to take a thorough approach to fulfilling the nutritional needs of older people living in aged care facilities. It's also important that the government makes sure aged-care homes offer good quality and healthy meals.

It’s one thing for dietitians to check the Menus provided, it’s quite another to actually see & taste the food as served. Often bears no or very little relevance to what’s listed on the Menu. They need to actually come into the Aged Care facility & taste what’s served to the Residents.
